Anyone grab the 1020 today?

Kinda curious how the camera is, and if Nokia finally fixed their issues with the 820's and 920's producing overly grainy and deteriorated photos.

I did, and absolutely love it. I came from an iPhone 5 and have no regrets leaving.

I signed up for a 500px account the other day to start displaying some of my photos, you can check them out here

Wow, couldn't tell if its a phone or a DSR....

Wish I waited another half year instead of getting the 920 I'm stuck with until January 2015 :(

Thank you! I slightly modified the brightness/contrast in photoshop on some of the photos but most of them are from just shooting automatically. I am still learning how to use the settings with the camera.

If you're up for a new phone and care about taking pictures more than other things then the 1020 is the best smartphone for that job.  There's just no comparison out there on a phone, and I think many point and shoot cameras are also put to shame by it.  If AT&T and Nokia do well with marketing it in the US it should catch on, it just takes the right message to the right group and you should see solid sales.

Either way though, it doesn't have to sell in massive numbers like the 520, because of the difference in price and margins between the two, but if they can sell 1million at least I'd say that'd be a success.

I am still on the fence about upgrading from my 920. Gdr3 comes out at the end of the year which allows 1080p screens and quad core processors. do I get the 1020 now or wait for a quadcore  1080p version later.

Nice shots! Now you have me wanting to just say the hell with things, and upgrade anyways.

You should familiarize yourself with real photography then. It's incredibly obviously clear they aren't anywhere near DSLR quality. They look about like I expected. Mostly overhyped. In good lighting they do look good, but in most shots they don't look much different than most other camera phone pictures to me. The macro shots look pretty good though.

It depends on how the pics were posted. if they were posted from the phone then they were downscaled. WP8 tends to downscale the pics if posted from the phone itself.

That doesn't really have much effect on the lighting and color reproduction though. You can see most of the shots that don't have perfect lighting have that familiar camera phone washed out contrast look.

I know what you mean but I plan to stick to my 920 for a little while longer.   Hopefully the 1020's successor will include a smaller camera that doesn't protrude plus whatever other goodies Nokia add to their next generation Lumias.  The 920's camera is still in the top 3 (along with the 1020 and the 925) so there's no hurry to upgrade.

Smaller hump means smaller sensor which mean loss in picture quality and that wont be a 1020 successor. If you want a smaller hump you wont get the 1020 quality.

Perhaps but there's more to the camera than just the sensor and they've already reduced it's size quite a bit from the 8080.  I would expect them to refine the design further in the next iteration.

I am not saying 1020 is DSLR worthy but saying its photos looks no better than other phone cameras is just...nuts.

I'll be coming back to this thread in 6 months to a year, just to see how the usability is, what it's like to live with, upgradeability etc...

(As I'll be elligable to upgrade in May)

Although I wholeheartedly agree, it's not a fair comparison

No? I mean, I'm not saying it's not one of the top smartphone cameras, but it still hasn't pulled away from "camera phone" quality. Yes, detail is there with the high megapixel, but there's a hell of a lot more to a picture than just detail. The rest is still mostly on par with the iPhone or S4.

Well, I agree it's not, but the way I've heard people talk about it they really do think it is.

Spot on... it' still a smartphone!  But they really make marketing big, just think "OMG MY PHONE HAS MOAR MEGAPIXELS THAN YOUR dSLR IT ROXXERS JOOR BOXXERS" but fail to realize it's 5MP using up-scaling technology (a rather good one too)

It's obviously not as good as a DSLR camera but it's as good, if not better, than most point-and-shoot cameras available now. With that said, it's quite an impressive feat considering the fact that it's just a smartphone camera. This shot approaches (low-end) DSLR quality though. I think you can agree with me on that.

Tried one out at the store today.  The protrusion is much smaller than it looked in the pictures, and still significantly lighter than the 920.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the 925 but it did give me pause.  Its not SLR, but seems another level above the phone competition, upscaling or not.
