Raid Card

Recommended Posts

Right now, my RAID 0 is on the motherboard raid. I would like to build my new computer with 3-4 different raid sets. I know to go with LSI, but this isnt for a server, its just for my next build.

I want the card to be able to handle a minimum of 4 drives and a max of 8. It doesnt need battery backup. I just want a good hardware raid solution for my next build

Thanks guys

What new board do you have? Most likely you will need a RAID card for more RAID drives.

Go for an end of life enterprise card like HPs p800 or p400 or dells smartarray cards.

Don't compromise on a BBU and large cache

50-100$ online no point in paying the same for a new card with 4 ports

Its for a New build. Itll either be Haswell / Z87 chipset or AMD's Vishera / 990/970 chipset

Based on my very limited experience with these cards, my advice would be:

1) Rebranded LSI cards are the way to go like the IBM ServeRAID M series and the Dell PERC H series cards. These can be had for very cheap on eBay and can even be cross flashed to their LSI equivalents.

2) HP cards whilst very nice have had firmware updates in the past that stop them working on any machine that isn't made by HP.

3) Be very careful on the drives you choose. These cards are less forgiving of long recovery times and TLER (or its equivalent) is very important. NAS (like WD Reds) or enterprise class (like WD RE series) drives should be used.

4) If you are wanting RAID 5/6/50/60 make sure the card has a decent cache and ideally battery backup. There are cards that can do these RAID levels but suck performance wise because they don't have the cache. A lack of battery back up can mean an unrecoverable RAID array should you lose power when writing.
