Switch off lights when parked, can damage car?

Recommended Posts

Sooo, I need to go to the bottom of this dilemma, cuz I need to find out if I'm doing it wrong. That's what my bf is telling me and he's starting to be more and more angry with me becuse of this.

I'm thinking, "this cant affect the car" but he says that I'm not allowed to drive his car because the fact that I always switch off the lights when Im done driving may damage the car and its electronics.

For me its like... you turn off things when u are done driving. Thats a good and natural thing to do, but really. Me switching off lights all the time comes from a habit. When I drove my old car (Toyota 1992), that was neccessary. Otherwise the battery would run empty.

So, I've now completed a forum registration here at Honda forum just to ask you Honda experts here... What is right? Am I damaging his car for forgetting to switch off lights. Or should you always leave that lights lever in auto mode?

Oh and it's a Honda civic sport edition from 2010.

I'm hoping u tell me that I am not damaging his car, because it would be so freckin sweet to print the forum replies, glue it to his face and prove him wrong.

Many thanks in advance.

Oh BS -- there is something wrong if you don't have a switch to shut off the headlights whenever you want to.

Thank you? I  got it!

Switching the headlights off breaks them? I'd still be laughing if someone told me that. Laughing inches away from his face. Forcing the laughter out to remind them how wrong they are.

If I don't turn my headlights off when I turn my engine off, they stay on and drain the battery, same for the vehicles I drive at work.

After I sing this song to him.

You can switch off your headlights or you can leave them in the auto mode, either way it doesn't matter and neither method will damage the car.

I have a BMW 3 series, and I leave it on the auto mode. This illuminates the angel eyes as DRL, and headlights come on as appropriate (and when the headlights come on, there is an indicator on the dash). I just have a habit of turning on my fog lights when the headlights come on, nice to have the extra light output.

BTW, this isn't a Honda forum ;) but this is a simple enough general question.

Turning the lights off can break them?  Does he check the exhaust ball bearings or perhaps the gas tank is running low on water ( you know, it needs to keep properly hydrated too)... and yes i'm aware those are moronic but one never knows

To your boyfriend I say:

And to you I say, if your BF wants to leave the lights on because he thinks we will be invaded by little green men or elvis and michael jackson will come down from the moon, for whatever reason, it's his choice and his car? Yes he is being anal, but the truth of the matter is, he saying it for some reason (although albeit insane)...

I can't tell you how many times i've told my other half "Don't hold the window button, alls it takes is one press, they're automatic"... 3 years in the same car, i've given up

Is this for real? If your boyfriend really thinks this, then I would get a new boyfriend.

I had a 2010 Civic LX up until a few months ago. Like you, I'd always turn off my headlights AFTER the car was off. Been doing this since I bought it a few years ago. One day, I noticed that it was shifting rather sluggishly so I decided to drive it to the dealer to get it checked out. On the way there, the entire transmission fell out of the car and right onto the highway. Had to get it towed. Thankfully I was only 2 miles away so it wasn't too bad of a charge. After I explained the situation and they looked the car over, they concluded that because of my habit of turning the lights off after the car was turned off, the computer chip signals/sensors became garbled and told the car to eject the transmission.

Just kidding, why would that happen. -__- ,

nothing bad will come of turning your lights off after the car is shut down.

The BF might be onto something here... I've been turning my lights on and off for a while now and every year I have to repair and replace parts on my car... just a few months a go, I had to replace the battery! and my rear window on the drivers side has stopped working.. also, the exhaust fell off a year ago and I've had to replace the front tyres (again!)

I'm going to stop turning my lights off and see if my car develops any more faults.

I think he's on to something, it would explain why my car broke down once about five years ago.

Your boyfriend is getting ###### off cause you have automatic lights (a sensor built into either the dash or rearview mirror) and is just being a lazy b*******...

Also if it will damage the car to turn off the lights than it means that there is something really ######ed with the electronics in the car to begin with...

Ridiculous, tell him he's an idiot. If anything having the lights on causes more issues, with all that you know, electricity running through the wires.

i think i understand what your boyfriend means. If the car have a light sensor and auto-lights turns the lights on or off automatically when needed... he must be ****ed off when he hopes those smart auto-lights are turning on when it's dark, but no, because girlfriend put the switch in off :)

Guys are like that. I also like all my car settings to be the way i left, eheh

is this the equivalent of leaving the toilet seat up or am I talking crap (pun intended) :D

Nope you're not talking crap.

He is lying but i can understand him getting frustrated by it. There's absolutely no reason to turn off the light on a car with an auto lights mode. You just force the next person taking it to put the lights back in auto mode again for absolutely no reason. I really hate when someone takes my car and turn off the lights.

Actually I heard about this somewhere. Note that the point is not a matter of turning off the lights, it's turning off the lights after turning off the car. A few people I know (or one friend far as I remember) told me once that I should switch the lights off before I turn off the car. I don't really care tho, I keep doing as I remember lol.

I think the point is, when you turn off the car leaving the lights on, the lights will depend on solely on the battery, but thats a couple of seconds thing and when you turn it back on it's supposed to "recharge" it right?
