UK Government Outpaced by Cyber-Crime

Recommended Posts

Concerns have been raised regarding the problem of Internet crime, after a committee of MPs on Tuesday said Britain was too complacent in its actions against it.

After a ten-month inquiry into the matter, the Commons home affairs committee believes police should be given increased cyber-powers, training and resources in order to help deal with the threat. Additionally, the MPs said a dedicated cyber-espionage team should be created, in order to respond to attacks.

I'm sure the NSA will willingly show them how it's done. :(

A lot of it is cold calling -> demand for money to fix or return your computer at the moment. They claim to be from either Microsoft, BT or AOL and have a non-native accent.

I tell anyone contacted by these people to contact the police when it happens but usually no follow up - even for those duped into installing something or having been ransomed.

People that want to, will find a way. With patience, skill (Smilianets & Co) and government support at times (Stuxnet & Co). Cyber-crime is a natural consequence of many years of absolute irresponsibility from computer software companies. They have only exploded so rapidly because nobody thought it would be a good idea to take a stance against the ones that knowingly create the holes first and foremost.

The UK's GCHQ has an internet monitoring system that actually snoops on more data than the NSA. However, that doesn't mean the data is processed or used in the same way so it's very hard to compare such systems.

What can they do? The only thing they can do is put DPI boxes on big tier 1 lines which they have anyway.

The government need to understand the internet.

Good job wasting other people's time, smartpants! It's hard enough to get proper support from them when one can get through.

You DO know that Microsoft never actually cold call people to "fix" their technical problems (that they probably don't even have), right?

These callers are 100% scammers and deserve having their time wasted.  I've done similar, but instead of telling him I had Fedora, I went with Windows 3.11. :p
