Forza 5 "hardest thing Turn 10 has done", cloud offers 600% more AI

Recommended Posts

so far EVERY racign game in the world has the worst AI possible, basically on rails, with simple avoidance routines, and catch up boosts to keep up with a faster player.

Not every racing game. Grand Prix 4 had great AI that hasn't been beaten since. It would make various kinds of overtake attempts, sometimes wild dives, defend hard and fair, leave spaces, race through corners, fall for "sneak peaks" and even genuinely miss its braking point and plow into the back of you.  The AI in GP4 is the best racing experience I've ever had with an AI (was better than a human player for that matter too). Makes the Codemaster F1 games look woeful at best (and are on rails).

Really interested to see what they can do with the AI in Forza though. It is the only game making me seriously consider getting an Xbox as well this gen, as a good racing game with good AI is something I've been wanting again for some time.  (Y)

Actually most of that AI is simply on rails AI with options. it's basically on rails, and when overtaking the "AI" is given a few options based on the possibilities and does a random test of each, the errors are also a simple random check, same thing they did with Forza 3 and 4.

I want to race against a Lewis Hamilton AI.

Well the way the Driveatars sound it seems to me that it's learning based on how YOU drive and then matches you, so it's like your ghost driver.  Now when you are playing online and the other players aren't actually their but you're racing their driveatars then technically you're racing individual custom AIs.   If this is how I think it is then a Lewis Hamilton AI like you said should be possible, that is, if he plays forza 5 enough.  :P

No one on the PC wanted to spend the money to run the datacenters to process the AI maybe?   It's kind of expensive, MS doing it as part of XBL and offering the option to developers at a cheap price is exactly why more developers are talking about doing it now and why no one has bothered to do it on the PC, regardless of the game type.  Could you imagine if someone like EA had this option for games on Origin but they charged some crazy price to the developers for it?  They'd opt not to use it I bet, not that it doesn't add value to the game in some way but that it'd hurt them financially.   This is exactly what the guys at Respawn said, MS made it very low cost and flexible that it's now doable for them when it wasn't before.

I think the reason PCs haven't offloaded AI yet is because you have the CPU which can handle all the AI and the GPU does all the graphics processing. This means you can max out the CPU AI (note: not saying this would be as good as cloud AI!) while not impacting graphics at all - not the same for a console (well not quite the same).

Well, it's true that right now, on the PC, it's the CPU that bottlenecks most high end GPUs.  We also have to remember though that the PC has other tasks going on in the BG as well when you play a game, unless you close everything which I never do.   Sometimes I'd be playing a game and have VMs running in the background as well plus all the apps I have open.
