Wasn't this common knowledge months ago?

Since the reveal pretty much

That's exactly why. Thank god for modders ;) I still get a laugh out of Sony charging ?15 for 8 MB back in the day   Internal > external any day. Marcus Beer put it best; "1 box to rule them all", + DVR box + x external drives + X360 = not 1 box at all. Already have enough electronics that need charging/powered I don't want to be hooking up endless EXTs.

Why would the external HDD need power ? And if you're using a external cable/sat box, well you already have it along with your Xbox from before....

Personally, I think 500gb should be sufficient for my use.  Also using the cloud as storage is only under certain circumstances.  I couldn't imagine having to download/stream from the cloud constantly to play.  Hell watching netflix alone can kill my internet cap.  I only get 120gb a month. So for me, and I am sure many others.. the cloud just isn't feasable with the internet connections/service we have.

I don't mind the whole internal vs. External thing, however having 3 kids that can be quite clumsy.. I would be scared of having an external that they decide to take, move, touch, etc.  So for me, and my internet/family situation.. the ps4's internal upgrade capability is far better than "Cloud" or External solutions.

I understand your worry, but you'll be lucky to hit 1Gb on cloud data. Watching a 1080p stream is a lot different to a couple of compressed bits and bobs.

If you move to a different console on the PS4, will you be able to download your game saves or anything?

Google upgrading PS3 hard drive. Few people. Okay.

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ps3+hard+drive

Top result, over 1 million views. Many others, over 100k.

I agree lots of people upgraded their PS3 hard drives. But with the next gen coming in at 500GB, it will probably be enthusiasts and people with huge HD libraries. As drives get faster and denser with more cache, it would be nice, but again, we're talking enthusiasts.

I don't think too many people will be connecting front USB drives. But they really shouldn't need it.

On basic cloud data, it's not much.  However if games are installed to/saved on the cloud.  Then the transfer of that data, and the caching of resources and such will eat up internet fast.

Also, as far as I know.. yes you will be able to get game saves and such.  Plus.. I don't mind if I use up someone elses internet (if they are ok with it).  but having as many of us in the house as we do.. the internet usage has to be monitored very closely.  The past 2 months (due to kids sneaking onto netflix) we have been charged an extra 60$ (45gb) in overages.

I really don't see what the big deal between internal or external drives.  An external USB3 drive will be as fast (or possibly faster if you can grab data from both drives simultaneously) as an internal stock one.  It just doesn't look as tidy.

I'm sure there will be people that will throw in an SDD drive but then you have space limitations and greater expense.

It's all a bit of a trade off.

I wonder if the PS3 hardware would support SATA3 SSDS?

It will (SATA is backwards compatible), but you won't see SATA3 performance.

SSDs do bring complete silence and less heat. I don't think 128GB would really present a space limitation, but if I believe that, I have to concede with 500GB base drive, the ability or inability to upgrade internally is actually a non-issue.

I liked the option i had on the xbox to upgrade the size but i never did. I didnt feel like copying the new files over to the new upgraded drive. Imagine just sitting there waiting to transfer all the data to the new drive. To me it just seems simpler to just get a hdd connect it and be done with it.

Never did it on any of my PS3's, don't care for that feature at all. The ability to use an external USB 3 works well for me as I imagine I can then take my games library with me and use my gamertag on my friends console

Props to Sony for this! This allows you to replace a failing hard drive once the system is out of warranty.

Its nice to see Sony continue this policy from the ps3.

As far as this being a big blow to the X1, this sounds like a very subjective topic.

Since MS now allows us to use ANY external storage to store anything that a built in drive could, it solves a problem I had with the 360 and is enough to make me happy. As someone that builds pcs, having the option to replace the drive like the ps4 would be neater, but it won't be any cheaper now vs external storage on the X1.

This gen, the replaceable drives on the 360 were more expensive than buying a bare 2.5" drive for the ps3. Next gen, I can use any cheap 2.5" or 3.5" drive externally with the X1 or any 2.5" drive internally with the ps4, so there won't be any cost advantage.

Does anyone know if Sony confirmed that an external drive can act as an internal drive like the X1? If so, I'll likely just have a single large external that can act as storage/backup for both (if I can partition the external).

so, whats the technical reason that MSFT decided that you must be removed from the ability to replace the internal HDD?

at least from mechanical stand point, replacing the Xbox one internal HDD are lot easier than replacing Laptop internal SSD ...

Having an extra choice is always a plus so that another point for the PS4 as far as i am concerened.

Also having the advantage of replacing the HD yourself in case of HD failure instead of sending the whole console to SONY  for something i could easily do myself is a major convenience from every aspect (time, money, etc).

is that what you have to do with xbone in case of hd failure?Send the whole thing to MS?

If the hdd fails you'd likely have to send it in to Sony anyways as you wouldn't be able to get the OS off of it and onto your new hdd.

Replacing internal is simply better, but at least this time around you wont have to give away a weeks food bill to buy a MS branded drive.

What would have been nice is the option.

Personally i'd like to be able to replace the internal XB1 drive with a massive one, like on the PS. However many people aren't comfortable with doing this and doesn't it void the warranty anyway (not sure on that)?

For these people, external would be the better option.

Of course i'm not going to cry about it. If i go the PS route then i'll undoubtedly replace the internal but if i go the XB1 route i'll choose a suitable external or see if the cloud is up to scratch.

It might be simply better, but there is a possibility that it can drag down your performance.

One of the big features that the Xbox One has is it has some kind of Flash cache and beyond 3D was speculating it might be on the hard drive.

500GB HD + SSD type flash cache?

So, this might be done to speed up performance and it would make sense that Microsoft doesn't allow it for this reason.

The thing you guys have to understand is that Microsoft isn't limiting people because they like to do this, there are solid reasons why this would be no bueno.

There would be no performance hit by installing a larger hard drive.

You guys are really starting to struggle to justify what amounts to simply a bad decision.

So all HDD drives come with SSD caches now? Seriously?

I am not struggling with any justification of anything. If you have something in the box that is not replaceable there has to be a reason for it.

HINT: THEY MADE IT REPLACABLE BEFORE. WHY IS THAT?

I am not going to get banned again,

so I am going to ask you to really

use your head and think about this really hard.

I know you can do it!
