Your tech confessions: What are you afraid to admit?

I too, cannot type without looking down, despite knowing how to type.

I know squat on PHP.  And, I hate doing the graphical design of websites, yet love coding the logic behind them.

Everyone says I have OCD on cleaning as my house is always clean yet, my computer office is trashed 99% of the time.

I will never be a fan of Apple, MS, Android, etc. To me each device, os, and company behind it will always have their pros/cons.

I have yet to play a game on a counsel unit.

OMG...we could be twins.  Where have you been all of my life? :)  Except that I do like Apple and Microsoft....sorry.

I'm another person who looks down when I'm typing, even though I can touch type perfectly well.

I completely failed my first touch typing class (scored about 6/100). Everyone else scored 70/100 or higher.

It took me a few years of practice (we didn't have a computer back when I did it the first time) and another course to get my touch typing certificate. Luckily I'm a very fast typer now :P

I still am not a good typist after using computers for 16 years. I need to look at the keyboard half the time and I'm relatively slow at typing.

I don't really know any programming languages or how to code, aside from basic HTML and CSS, despite the fact I took a C++ class in high school. I'm just not good at logic, I guess. lol.

At uni, I was taught OOP via Java (1.0, then 1.1, then 1.2).  I promptly and deliberately forgot all I was ever taught because I found Java (back then) to be a pointless and horrendous language.  It took me quite a while to understand OOP, at first I just didn't "get it".

- heh, i actually started my university in computer science related degree and we were taught java and OOP and regardless of countless tutorials/one-on-ones i just didn't get it either.  i was able to understand their simplified real-world examples but i could not apply them into code well.

- in the course above, we had a project to do for which i came up with 3 different algorithms because the first two didn't appear to work.  the third one didn't work either and i gave up.  months later while doing random hard drive clean up i came across my project files again and i noticed that none of the algorithms worked because i never initialized any of the variables i used properly.

- i'm a closet geek but i hate buying stuff that i won't use so i avoid any hardware purchases until i can totally justify it (it's the accountant in me) and i try to make as much use of it as possible.  i trade thousands of dollars in stocks and options without blinking an eye but god forbid if i buy a $20 gadget without buyer's remorse unless i put it to use right away.

  • 3 weeks later...

I often go back over code I had written months or weeks earlier, and wonder WTF I was thinking when I wrote it.
I curse a lot when programming if my code doesn't work.  ie) "Why the ###### isn't this working?!"
I write out every tutorial I do in hopes that I will learn more.. however it rarely works, and I quite often go back and look at code (even code I wrote to solve problems on my own).
I have a hard time grasping new concepts.

ie) I get what a pointer is, but I don't understand when/why when having a parameter that is a pointer you need to pass it as a reference.

or) Why you have to @Override sometimes in Java but not others, even if it is an extension of a virtual class.

My confession ? 70 % of the PCs I repair / reinstall are plagued by trojans. The fact ? Most of them receive trojans because of porn downloads . When my customer asks me what problems it had ... OH WELL...

I love building rigs from scratch but two weeks later I am damn sorry over what components I chose for it. Thats my problem.

I've walked away from AT LEAST 2 jobs, where i've been asked to fix a computer, made it worse, gave up, told them it was fixed.. then cut all ties.

I'm not afraid to admit this, but i am a little ashamed..

I touch type without using the home row. I never learned typing with using the home row so I cannot type "properly", but I can still easily type 50+ WPM (haven't tested myself in ages but I have typed that quickly in the past). As such I occasionally have my fingers offset where I have to look down to correct them (I know how it feels when my fingers are on the right keys, but sometimes they get off and I have to look at them to correct them).

I sometimes write out responses to posts on sites I visit, only to feel the response doesn't go anywhere (not that it would be a bad post, I just sometimes feel like it's not worth posting) and end up deleting it after typing out a paragraph or two.

I have been using Apple computers since the mid 90's, they are what I learned on, and as a result I have been using OS X since it's inception.

I have opened Terminal in OS X five times tops, and every single time was with the help of a tutorial online.

I ruined all of the components I purchased for a custom built gaming PC because I was an idiot and did not see that thermal paste got on a few of the pins of the CPU.

When I went to power it up, there was a poof of blue smoke, a very distinct smell of burning electronics, and nothing at all worked. Was probably close to $1000 worth of product, if not more.

Back in 2001 I pieced a (at the time) top of the line AMD Athlon-based PC together. With the help of a friend. Well, remember how the die on Thunderbird-gen Athlons was exposed? Just one small move while putting the heatsink on -> crack in the die, DM 620 (?310) down the drain.

Also I use the terminal in OS X all the time. Having used UNIXoid OSs since 1993 I'm used to perform file operations via CLI.

I think thinkpads are one of the ugliest laptops you can buy today and would never recommend one based on solely that.

For real? They are the only Windows laptops I can recommend because of their style and durability.

Up until about a year ago, any PC I attempted to build fried within a week.

H-How many did you go through?!

My personal confessions:

  • I use LastPass with the automatic login feature. I also don't have a password for my desktop computer. Essentially, if someone steals my physical computer or comes over, all of my stuff is readily accessible. I'm... lazy, I guess is the best descriptive word here.
  • Being a techie with unlimited cellular data, I actually use less than 200MB per month.
  • I keep buying games I don't have time to play. My backlog is ridiculous.
  • I'll spend more time modifying an app or game than I actually use it.

It took until 2012 until I had a smartphone.

This one I'm not even ashamed of. November 29th 2012 to be exact. I miss charging my phone once every week or two. :/

I'm at 170 on Steam alone. I'm more impressed to see how many you actually have installed. Goddamn...

900GB steam folder, I have a private RAID0 array for it
