I was cheated over 'Jeopardy!' spelling

Recommended Posts

i hate to say it but i am on Jeopardy's side on this one. the if you spell the word wrong it cannot be the right answer.

Look at the photo, the kid clearly knew the correct answer. There has to be some "spirit of the rules" involved--especially since, as someone else pointed out, had it been an oral response it would have been fine. In fact, even if someone pronounces a word improperly, it's accepted as long as it's obvious what they meant and it was correct. Also, this is a KID we are talking about.

Indeed. The rules are the rules. He mis-spelled it when giving his answer, therefore, incorrect!

What a whiner-baby...

What's next? People suing Family Feud because they get the answers wrong?

He didn't actually lose any money. Nothing was harmed except his ego.

If he wasn't being absolutely murdered by that other kid, this might have been more significant.

Yea, well.  I am not smart enough to be on Jeopardy so I have an excuse  :p

I'm not smart enough to even understand the answers most of the time. :D

One extra chromosome, big freakin deal

so he had 1 extra letter in the word, big freakin deal

i'd like to see you spell random big words that are hardly ever used correctly on the spot.

they should have cut the kid a break, seriously

I believe, even if he were to give the answer verbally, he would have been wrong.  Think about how you spell a word you're not certain of - you repeat it over in your head and spell it out.  Either way, he would have included the extra "t".

Fail to see the issue here, no money was lost though I guess his pride took a bit of a hit (though I would think all this extra media attention would exactly help his cause)?  Not like this was a close race anyway (video link below for those interested):

He didn't lose anything, runner up paid $2000.00, he had $9600.00 and bet $3000.00.  If they gave it to him he still would have only won $2000.00. Get over it that's life win some lose some.

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? A Connecticut eighth-grader who misspelled the correct answer to a "Jeopardy!" question and lost money over it says he was cheated.

Thomas Hurley III correctly answered the Final Jeopardy question about the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln. But Thomas spelled it "emanciptation" and was ruled out by host Alex Trebek.

He bet $3,000 of his $9,600 in winnings and finished well behind a rival who amassed $66,600.

"I was pretty upset that I was cheated out of the final 'Jeopardy!' question," he told The News-Times of Danbury (http://bit.ly/13KTg7D). "It was just a spelling error."

The Newtown Middle School student won $2,000 as the runner-up.

I don't see emanciptation on there at all.

They should get bureaucracy and buoyancy.

That is because it is a 3rd grade word.

I kinda wonder about those thinking it is a big word ;)

I also found a 5th grade class that teaches it.

Of course, some teach it in middle school.
