John Carmack has not left id Software for Oculus

And what does him being heavily into the linux scene have to do with anything ?

You said he has not done anything revolutionary in the last 20 years, Carmack willing to develop and port his games and engines over to linux is revolutionary because before him no one wanted to bother with it because it was linux, either way I dont really want to debate with someone as stubborn as you are so good day to you.

That isn't "revolutionary".

I'm sure there are plenty of topics online already discussing that. I have no interest in debating with you what the pros and cons of it are.

so you make a random "point" but not only won't you defend it, you're not even going to try to explain what the point is...  got it.

either way none of this makes Carmack a fantastic contributor to modern gaming today. he contributed to the roots and provided great contributions there, but it's a long time since he has given anything to gaming.

The point is he and his team have contributed a new engine which is now being used for at least 3 next-gen games.

He is now contributing towards Oculus Rift too which is receiving a lot of interest and praise in the industry. So much so even MS/Sony are rumoured to be interested in adding support or releasing competitors.

The pros and cons of those is not the topic of discussion.

Pretty self explanatory.

Epic also contributed a new engine, used by about 10 times that many games, CrySoft has contributed an engine, one arguably better than tech 5, Dice has contributed an engine where I would say there's no argument it's better.

and that's just the top of the iceberg, being on the management of a company who makes a new engine isn't a big deal, especially when the engine in question is a fairly bog standard mediocre engine with one revolutionary feature that didn't work. And I really wish megatexture had worked since as a 3D modeler myself,. there's nothing that annoys me more than tiled textures. but there's many tricks that mitigate or even remove the tiles that you can use.

whether he's actually contributing to rift is what is at question here. he's in management, and the only thing he's truly contributing there is his name.

What oculus needs is people who can contribute new ideas and uses. which is a much younger crowd of new and experimental developers than Carmack, they're the ones who today are who Carmack was when he was their age, some 15-20 years ago.

So let's see here, you've assumed that id tech 5 was licensable when it was not, you've assumed he was a game designer when he is an engine programmer, you've assumed Carmack was "just management" despite his well-documented personality and you're again assuming id tech 5 is little more than MegaTexture and that it has "failed".

Yeah, I don't think anyone needs to defend themselves from your "points", you're quite clearly just coasting here.

Bwahaha, if you're getting texture tiling on a 3D mesh you're -really- doing it wrong. Tiling is a world geometry problem which is what MegaTexture is intended to target.

Just let him be. He either has a grudge against Carmack or looking for petty fights.

I dont understand...    So you think that even though he was amazing 20 years ago,    it is irrelevant now????

Actually a brilliant character does not suddenly become irrelevant in 20 years,  a brilliant character is likely to stay this way.   I am sure he will contribute plenty to Rift!!!!

Dismissing his talent because he did not Personally slapped his name on anything recently is VERY short sighted of you. As is dismissing his previous work because it was 20 years ago.
Creativity does not suddenly evaporate from a person.     Of course he has a team writing his new engine!!!  Or course there is nothing super successful from ID recently..  but to blame him personally for it, and dismiss him as irrelevant is a bit too much!

But that is obviously just your opinion...  luckily many people dont agree.

I bet you think Alan Turing is irrelevant today too!

  • 3 months later...

End of an era :(

Very true but their last few games haven't been anything special, to me.

He's with an exciting new product :)
