uk [UK] Getting started with a VPN - recommended VPN service etc.

My ISP (TalkTalk via. Utility Warehouse) throttles the crap out of my torrent client, especially between 18:00-00:00, so people have suggested I pay a few quid a month for a VPN.

 

It's a 7 Mbps connection, so nothing special.

 

Can anyone help me get started? Perhaps a VPN service recommendation?

I would recommend getting a VPS or similar from these guys. I cannot recommend them highly enough. The speeds on the VPS 100/100 roughly although its shared its hellish fast and even their Windows 2008 boxes which I got are reasonable.

Wow, when people were telling me they're a few quid a month, I was expecting under a fiver a month.

 

If VPNs start at around ?15 for a basic "package", I cba with VPNs :P

What I actually meant was, Rent a VPS and set one up yourself! It would be a good learning experience if nothing else. That way its a bit more under your control too.

Find a cheap VPS in the UK / Europe here: http://www.lowendbox.com/tag/uk/ then install your own VPN server on it. Or even just torrent directly on it if the host permits it and FTP it back to your PC. That way you can easily seed back without leaving your PC on, presuming you want to.

Looks sweet. Using it now - the real test will be later, between 18:00 and midnight :)

 

EDIT: uTorrent can't connect to anyone now, it's not even showing a single peer. Hmm, so far not so good.

EDIT #2: TunnelBear doesn't allow torrent traffic. Oh well *uninstalls*  - I guess I'm still searching :D

ok, I'd paid for the year. The support team said although there were no free trials, if I am not happy with the service, I can cancel within 7 days.

Thats a good deal. Use port forwarding tcp/ip and netherlands connection. But thats just what i have heard ;)

I use TorGuard. It is a good VPN that I use that is quite great with the Speeds.

Tried turning on encryption?  Worked for me.

 

• Go to Options > Preferences > BitTorrent. Set Outgoing under Protocol Encryption to Enable, check "Allow incoming legacy connections".

I was looking at iPredator, that's run by people from The Pirate Bay if I remember correctly, and they had a 3 day trial last time I looked :)

I use a seedbox for private trackers only I get VPN with it and quite a lot of bandwidth never had problems with the people I use been with them for over a year now paying about ?12ish a month from seedboxes.cc (not sure if im allowed to mention them if no please delete and sorry about that)
