Boy wishes family car be struck by lightning

A Utah family found a new way to charge their electronics this week when a bolt of lightning jolted their car.

The Morlock kids, Taylor, Denham and Tanner, had a video camera running in the car while their father drove during a thunderstorm, according to KSL News. The footage shows sparks flying as the lightning crashes into the car.

"Holy crap," one of the kids says.

No one was injured, probably because a car's metal shell can protect occupants from a zap if they're sitting with the windows closed. But one of the boys said his brother, Taylor, really shouldn't have said what he did only moments before the strike.

Taylor told KSL he had wished out loud for the car to be struck by lightning, and them bam, it was. :huh:

However, the family's cell phones and other electronics, many of which had dead batteries, were all charged after the jolt of electricity, according to KSL.

If I remotely understand it myself, a lightning strike would raise voltage in any exposed conductor due to induction. That in turn would deliver a certain charge to a connected battery, which would then explode very violently, because this charge would exceed the maximum allowed voltage of that battery thousands of times.

 

Which, in retrospect, should have happened, too:

 

* because that smug, fat first-world kid even looks stupid

* because this story will actually be received seriously by people who still think lightning is whichever god smiting bad people for their sins and providing free firecrackers for the true believers

The story is straight up BS.  The current required to charge something that quickly would be incredibly high and would cause those batteries to explode.  Plus if the passengers didn't get touched by the jolt, then neither would anything else inside the vehicle.

I've been in a car hit by lightning. You know what happens to you?

 

Nothing. Nada, Zip.  A car is a bloody Faraday cage. As long as you're not touching bare metal, nothing can happen to you, because the charge cannot reach you.
