windows Good LAN messenger?

After searching, the threads about such software is 5+ years old.

 

Basically I want software that is free, doesn't need a central server and is designed specifically for LAN usage. Messaging (obviously) and File Transfers are a must.

 

I would prefer something that is relatively up to date. I have tried LAN Messenger but I am having issues with the file transfer not working correctly and it seems the software has been abandoned (people posting about issues on the forums with no response at all from the devs).

 

Any ideas as to what I can try out?

I had a need for such a program a couple years ago for a project & like you, I wanted something free. After Googling and finding every program I could I finally settled on Squiggle (linked in Budman's post). It was full-featured, easy to configure, and it was reliable in getting files and messages from point A to point B. Granted, this was two years ago, but I don't imagine LAN messaging is a hotbed of development and things probably haven't changed much since I did my research.

Honestly though, I like hearing other users experiences with them and getting more of a comparison rather than just "this one has feature X, while this one has feature Y".

So the 3 other people on neowin that might use such software -- those are the people you want to get insight from, because the reviews on the website, are not good enough? You need to hear it from some other random person here on neowin?

How about hey found, software X -- anyone else use it? This makes you look like you actual did at least a google search vs just wanting to get spoon fed information.

In the age of every social site having chat, every phone having sms, companies running OCS, google chat, yahoo messenger, etc.. etc. Do you really think there is much call for a serverless chat software?

@KM -- while that might have chat, that really look more like a tool to allow collage kids to share their latest movies and music to me vs chat software when the school blocks p2p protocols..

It worked excellently to share game patches etc. at the last two LAN parties I went to.

I used to value the opinions of others on Neowin in the past being a tech community and all (yes, I do value opinions on hardware/software coming from a tech website more than a random person leaving a review on said items website), so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if anyone had any such opinions on LAN messaging software, but your comment has shown me that maybe I shouldn't value the opinions of users of a tech website as much as I thought I would be able to.

I did mention software called LAN Messenger, which implies I at least searched enough to find it, which implies I was at least familiar with some of the other softwares, but a blind study produces better results (that is, if I present a few names, chances are I'll only get results about the software I did find, if I don't present any, I may hear of other software I didn't find along with software I did find).

Last I checked social sites do not make it easy to share files, not everyone on the LAN has a phone so that's not a viable option, I am not a company and do not need an OCS solution, and I need something that works while offline (eliminating google chat, yahoo messenger, etc). I never said there was MUCH need for serverless chat software, but the bottom line is I needed a good solution for such service so I made a post about it.

 

That being said, I have since decided tried out Squiggle and it indeed serves the purposes I need.

Thanks, while Budman did link the software before you mentioned it, your post is pretty much what I was hoping to get in terms of responses to my question.

Have you looked into Microsoft Lync 2013?  Integrates with AD, which should make account setup convenient, and has the features you asked about.
