NEOdroid: Galaxy S4 ROM for Neowin!

Recommended Posts

To those who are questioning the point of this, the OP just wanted a fun project and this gave them a theme to work towards rather than just making a generic ROM.

This.

If you have something negative to say about this.. please just refrain and move on. Not everything has to have some lofty, revolutionary outcome. Perhaps he just wants to learn more about creating and compiling ROMs and the general process, and the Neowin theme gives some direction for it. Personally I think it's cool. Projects are more fun ways to learn than just studying.

Neowin is, among other things, about encouraging other 'geeks' and facilitating things like this through collaboration and helpful input. Constructive criticism is fine and in fact encouraged, but please don't be negative just for the sake of it. Thanks!

(fusi0n, Haggis, others.. rock on, looks neat so far. :) )

I would gladly make up a wallpaper if you gave me the dimensions needed.  What I'm saying is, if you want to make something good, don't squeeze a logo beyond it's aspect ratio - be it a wallpaper, poster, powerpoint slide, etc...

If you take that as a "talking down" rather than any criticism, that's kinda more your issue than mine, surely - seeing as this is an open forum?

I see what your saying, however you said in an inflammatory way. Could have worded it better ;) :).

Now let's move on! I believe the dimensions would be 1080x1920 as that's the screen resolution of the s4. If I have any spare time, I'll give the default wallpaper a go tomorrow :). Does anybody have the Neowin logo PSD at hand?

Also, this is being built off of the stock rom, yes? Why not a CM 10.2 nightly or the Google Play 4.3 ROM (Still has sCover support [which I use!], IR blaster support etc)? That would be much better :)

As for everyone else/others that are likely to moan, this is a community project which is a fantastic learning tool for the OP and us all to learn with! :D

The PSD is attached to the post of the bootanimation. If you can correct it, please do so. If you want to add to it, please do so.

I'll take a look when home.  Is the resolution the same for wallpapers?

Note: You've also stretched it in your sig.  Are you not getting what I'm saying?  Do you follow what I mean about aspect ratios?

Yep, 1080x1920 for portrait wallpapers, and 1920x1080 for scrolling papers I think! - Edit, nope the landscape one can't make sense, IDK what it would be!

Can someone explain to me the difference between ROM and Jailbreaking?

When I bought a used Note to see if I'd like Android, I never understood how to ROM. I did hate alot of the bloatware that came with the Note though.

ROM = Phone OS Basically

Jailbreaking = Gaining root access on an iPhone

Root = Gaining root access on an Android

To flash a rom, you need to first root your phone, then install a custom recovery. I recommend Clockwork Mod. After you root your phone, just install Rom Manager from the play store and it will install a custom recovery for you. After that, pick your favorite ROM for you phone, boot into recovery, wipe data (factory reset), wipe cache, and then install zip.

Are you using a American Note or an International Note.

I know I'm being overly technical, but root isn't required to flash a ROM. An unlocked bootloader is required to flash a ROM. You can have an unlocked bootloader without having rooted the device. The inverse is also true.

Don't you have to have root to install the custom recovery? If you want to flash a CUSTOM rom, wouldn't you need a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM?  And to do that, wouldn't you need root?  I am just asking to make sure I am clear on everything..

Also, the AT&T S4 has a locked bootloader and there are ROMs for that.. You can flash Loki which bypasses it, but not unlocks it.

Depends on device and how much access to the bootloader you have.

If you have fastboot access, then you simply fastboot the recovery in.

I don't have the Note anymore, I didn't want to try and adjust to Android. Dumb reason, I know.

How do you know what ROM you'd like? Are they customized or could do you get a ROM like as if the phone came from Google?

Awesome work! I've been trying to make a bootanimation.zip for the past few hours.. I only get a blank screen for the boot logo..

Turns out, making a "universal" carrier build is a really bad idea. Therefore, I will be posting builds of ALL requested carriers. So far we have T-Mobile and Carrier Unlocked. The bad part is, I can only test the T-Mobile builds because my phone is a T-Mobile, however I am using it on AT&T.  The issue is with the basebands and you risk breaking your radio..

With that said, I will be able to port this ROM to any phone now if someone is interested..

Right now, I am uploading the ROM the Unlocked S4.. I will post when it is finished..
