XBOX One will work without Kinect plugged in

198 posts in this topic

I like how Microsoft is essentially going through a checklist of complaints about the Xbox One, crossing them out one by one. (Y)

A checklist of anti-consumer items created by the Mattrick regime and now being reversed by the Larsen-Green regime.

Who wants to bet that Microsoft reverses on more XBox stuff:

- 3rd party apps, IE & Skype no longer behind the XBL Gold paywall

- Kinect-less SKU

- Removed ads from XBox UI

I'd actually like to see them stick to their guns on the Kinect, if only for proof as to whether or not it's actually worth all the time and money they've invested into it if it's not something the gaming community will embrace.

Lowering the great paywall of Microsoft wouldn't be so bad though, even if only for Netflix/Hulu.

MS have only reversed one thing and that was the DRM.

I'm going to agree with you here. But it still sucks that to accomplish this you "have" to pay an extra $100, for now. Maybe a year in MS will release a SKU without it.

A year in I bet MS has lowered the price for it to where it's not an issue.  Everyone seems to be comparing this to the PS4 price, if a year from now they're both the same price but you still get Kinect as part of the XB1 then that looks like a huge deal to most and not the other way around.

The price reduction combined with not having to connect it would work as well. I don't think it's a PS4 price comparison. $499 is high, particularly if you have no interest in Kinect.

Here we are again with more good news from MS.  This was such a small deal that I had a feeling that this would turn out to be the reality.  Now people that had been complaining about privacy worries or wanting to be able to store it away when not in use get their wish.

And here we go again with people negative on MS for this news.  More good news is attacked and spun as a big minus.  I'm getting tired of this stuff going around and around.

Developers can still be confident that if they create compelling content that uses Kinect, every X1 owner can make use of it.  That means more Kinect only titles, but I think the bigger part is that means more hybrid options.  Taking core titles and using Kinect where it makes sense, not trying to break standard controls, but adding controls that compliment them.  That means voice and gesture uses.  At the same time, customers have the option of not using Kinect at all if they aren't interested.

Yeah I agree, and yet unfortunately, they seem to still get grief for it.  The internet echo chamber is just a mess sometimes.

They already removed the ads from the Home dash screen, so they seem to be trying to cut that stuff down already.

I still think we will see MS announce an open app store, something like a mobile app store, that is not behind Gold.  At the same time, they could offer some premium apps or content that is behind Gold.  We will see.

It is pretty stupid you have to pay an extra 100$ for it..

"Can't unplug it NSA stealing your data moan, moan, moan"

On confirmation that it can be unplugged:

"Why do you pay for it then? moan moan moan"

When people said MS never can win, they really are right. People are beyond jokes totally how they have strong emotions to corporations trying to innovate with new ideas for YOU to enjoy. If you can't see why Kinect being packaged with all Xbox's is good, then you're a arrogant fool who can't see past his own pizza filled bedroom. Rant over, don't even get me started about NeoGAF.

Sony have ruined their concept of the camera by not including it in the box to undercut MS and they know it.

Good move from Microsoft. They have many faults but they do at least listen to their customers.  (Y)

Am I missing something?... All I hear is bring on next gen, and when something different is brought to th table... Sll I hear is, nobody wants that. That's so stupid, y'all don't listen to y'all fan base... What's the point of even bothering if all everyone wants is a PS3.5 and Xbox540 (360+180, or half of 360, for those who don't get it).

New graphics card is all people really want and nothing more.

I'm really not interested in motion control gaming as it is now. It is too much of a gimmick and not enough of a practically serious implementation. The main problem is that however good the sensors are, it is limited to "2D" because we have to be in front of a camera/screen. Which limits it to "2D" situations in games (hence the awful gimmicky implementations). For motion control games to evolve beyond the gimmicks, I think we need a blend of the PS Move and Kinect. Primarily use Kinect, but have a palm-sized controller that has an analog stick and maybe two buttons on it, to give the extra dimension of input that is necessary for most games. Would be perfect for a game like Ryse... you could hold the controller in your left hand for movement, while still being able to raise your shield arm. Buttons could be mapped to bashing the shield over your opponents head or something. Meanwhile your right arm is completely free for swishing the sword around. Without that controller input though your limited to either being on rails and having Kinect combat, or having free movement with a regular controller and using Kinect for nothing more than voice control and writhing around on the sofa like an impaled Carthaginian. I'm not opposed to motion control gaming, but it does need Microsoft and/or Sony to focus on the details of how it can be practically used in games.

I don't want much in the way of graphics either. I think they're kind of in the right place now, developers just need focus on details like animations, lighting, etc. Everytime I see someone try to push them further they end up looking dreadful, with loads of bloom, glare, gloss, shine, etc that just make the game look worse (looking at you, Codemasters). I'd rather developers focused their efforts on AI as it hasn't changed a lot... if anything it has gone backwards in recent years.

What I really want for the next generation though is innovation in the gameplay and game ideas themselves, which is why the best E3 conference for me was Ubisoft's by some margin. They showed off some truly interesting games. To me, Microsoft showed off the same-old good-but-uninspiring games, and Sony didn't really show their strongest games at all.

I love how some people think if Kinect will not be used, it is not next generation and Sony is ruined because they did not bundle their camera.  Give me a break.  What do you call NES -> Super NES?

So enhancements in hardware means nothing these days?  The opportunity for better graphics, physics, and enhanced game mechanics mean absolutely nothing?

No...Kinect being forced on everybody is not good.  I am getting both consoles now that I hear it can be removed, since I have absolutely ZERO interest in using Kinect.  AT....ALL....  And no it is not because Kinect 1 was not developed very well, it just does NOT interest me.

Oh and I love this argument that people say to me:  "Well then stick with the 360".  Um, what about newer games that will be PS4 and Xbox One only?

It is a price comparison with the PS4 when everyone argues they shouldn't have to pay an extra $100 for Kinect.

I can see how you come to that conclusion, but it's not necessarily true. The Kinect costs about $100. I have a gen 1 Kinect and never use it, and don't want the extra cables or hassle. Since I'm not going to use it, why pay $499 for a console, which is high, when I know it includes $100 worth of something I'll never use and don't want.

I understand why its there, and if it indeed works better in significantly smaller spaces it'll see more use, just not from me. MS has a valid reason for making it mandatory, and people who will never use it have a valid reason for not being overjoyed to be buying $100 of something that they will never use.

How do you know Kinect2 is adding $100 to the price?

This is a rough guesstimate based on the current $99 retail price. I know you know that arguing we cannot know the "exact" amount is really pointless. Don't do it. Please. ;)

There's really only a paywall for IE and Netflix, which is huge. I'm sure there are more that are actually free elsewhere, but those are the big ones. If they free those two, with the quality of XBL I'm OK. I'm OK when I'm current on my sub, but when I'm not, not being able to Netflix is insane. Doesn't matter, I have a PS3 for that and the video quality is higher, but still. Hell, I can even Netflix in Windows 8 Modern UI for free.

I would assume that the video quality for Netflix on the X1 should bring it back to parity.

Do you not think though that for motion control games to get better and to a place where you may think its worth it, they need to go through the early phases with its consumers such as the one we are at now? Think about all of the technology in the world. If the early adaptations people just said you know what, it's good, but it could be better if it just did xyz... oh well i'll skip this. The things we take for granted today, were at some point a less feature rich, less refined form of what they are now.

I took my hat off to MS at their reveal, there were ALOT of people who weren't happy with their policies and their end game destination with the XB1 but at first they stood ground and said this is where we think the future is, come along for the ride. I personally thought some of the benefits of DRM and the concept of a better and more used Kinect were cool and exciting. Slowly though, the vast majority have convinced MS that maybe it was too early and that if they didn't change something then the console may flop.

I still respect them for being able to stand up and try and make amends (although the marketing/PR dept didn't exactly handle it very well) but I honestly wish they had stood their ground.

As for app's behind a pay wall, maybe this is a completely wrong view on things but do people seriously care? Netflix and IE being the examples thrown around. Are you seriously put off the console because of something its always done? Again I know it's not the attitude but if Sony's console can do something why aren't you buying that instead, either do it or don't use it in an argument. You're basically saying this console is better, but I'd rather get the worse variation and moan about it. If you're planning on buying both then guess what, use the PS4 for Netflix and web browsing and don't use the Xbox, simple! I also find it hard to believe that the type of people who are looking at getting these consoles don't have smart TV's now which a vast majority have web browsing and Netflix available, so scrap the console all together and just use your TV for, guess what, watching TV - maybe this is short sighted of me but I've had a TV that can do this for a few years now so it's not something new.

The was a comment by XboxOneDev on reddit that Kinect2 is adding more than just $100 to the price because the v2 is not just 3 cameras+ motor like the first one. It has its own processing silicon in it. There is also TimeOfFlight camera which is supposed to be a costly component too.

I know "exact" amount is pointless but all signs point to Kinect2 being a costlier component than v1.

Does PS4 even have a web browser? I know that PS3 has one but is said to be horrible/unusable etc.

I don't know. Honestly, I don't use console browsers. I just think it stinks it's behind the sub. My real issue is Netflix. It's more principle than issue.

I hope they don't. Kinect is what sets them apart from PS4. If not, it just increased specs and nothing special.
