Shoppers might have been confused by a new product that made its way into five Los Angeles Best Buy stores on Friday. Complete with a bar code, price and label, the box read: ?Another gadget you don?t really need.? Pranked!

The fake-out gadget containers, surfaced by Daily Mail and getting plenty of attention on the Web, were confirmed to Yahoo News to be the work of the Los Angeles-based street artist known as Plastic Jesus, who appears to be channeling the antics of another guerrilla-style artist, Banksy.

The boxes, which were sneaked onto the store shelves, looked real and came with a price tag, a QR code and the brand's own Geek Squad Protection offer.

But a closer look reveals a description that reads: ?Useless PLASTICBOX 1.2 for $99.99. Another gadget you don't really need. Will not work once you get it home. New model out in 4 weeks. Battery life is too short to be of use.?

The manufacturer?s warranty warns that there is none ?with this piece of crap.? It added: ?If you are dumb enough to buy it you deserve all you get.?

Photos show the realistic-looking boxes placed next to other electronics offered at the big-box store, including items such as GPS navigators, tablets and other must-have gadgets that draw in consumers.

?We are sold this equipment, often with the pre-release hype lasting many weeks and resembling a block buster movie, and told, 'This gadget is THE ONE,' only to be left disappointed,? Plastic Jesus, who didn't give his legal name, told Yahoo News in an email. He added, "I felt the best way to show my frustration at the gadget industry was with some action that I think many people will relate to.?

I thought it was about Microsoft Surface. :p

The Microsoft Surface is by far more feature rich than the Ipad. You get all of the preinstalled desktop apps plus the modern apps on the Surface. Additionally the Surface, unlike the Ipad, has a USB port, and a Micro SD slot etc.

I agree with the sentiment, most products don't live up to the expectation, or are what a person needs. Most things end up unused after the first couple of months.

My work gave me a nexus 7 all i use it for now is a remote for XBMC, which i could use my phone for.

My parents are the worst for this, every month they have some new device they want me to help them setup, and every time its not what they wanted, or doesn't work as well as they wanted.

Its because we're a nation of consumers. We're constantly being told to buy stuff, upgrade to the latest model, buy gifts for commercialized holidays, how buying stuff helps the economy etc.

But if you don't have the money to buy the stuff dont worry there's "infinite" credit to help you out...we have credit cards, store cards, 0% interest financing, payday loans etc

And the end result is you have a generation of people who aren't able to manage their finances because they spent all their money buying things.

I kind of want that. I think it'd look good under my TV. Plus, when people ask, "What is that?", I can say "The Internet".

Yawn. Nobody cares.

As for the topic: Awesome pranking.  Did any sell?

My question is how did they make room and adjust the shelf to place such an item without any BB rep asking if they needed help.  Just walking to the bluray section of my local bb I am asked 5 times if I need any help.

WTF?  Who said anything about an i-pad to even justify such a response?

Someone made a joke that the "another useless device" was the MS surface and you vomit a load on how it compares to the i-pad??!!

That was warranted for sure.

He didn't get the IT-crowd reference?

All it needs is a blinking red light and its perfect :D (I cared btw, made me chuckle a little)

OT: hehe, good statement I guess, technology is moving forward fast, maybe too fast. I personally don't mind having technology like a TV, lifetime of anywhere inbetween 5 and 25 years without instantly being horribly outdated.

We're at a point where most tech doesn't need yearly upgrades, CPU speeds are more then capable of the tasks on their devices, GPU's render crystal clear imagery with Futurama like resolutions "It's HD, it has a better resolution then real life".

I want new things, not just the same thing but 0.1% better.

I'm glad that some people understood the reference :).
