DocM
Wow calling someone a bigot based on that? That's a bit of a stretch. "While being old doesn't mean you're incompetent. it raises the risk a LOT. you may know the theory, but are you capable of doing the physical act safely over and over and over without mistakes ?" Is a perfectly valid non-bigoted opinion. Not really as regards statutory age limits by the states. The overall issue is more complex than you think. In all but a very fes areas where there are specific exemptions, airline pilots for one, age discrimination is illegal in the US. Want to pass an exemption for an age rule? Fine, go for it, but don't be surprised if senior organizations raise hell. Then you have uniformity problems. The states set the requirements for confealed carry and the instruction programs, which is in their jurisdiction per SCOTUS, but for uniformity and compliance with various federal anti-discrimination laws such a limit would have to be done by the feds. Big jurisdictional and 10th Amendment hurdles there. OTOH, most all the instructors are NRA certified too, they train the vast majority of the instructors even for police organizations etc., and as s private program it can set the qualification rules as it chooses. Should they? Maybe, and after this it may well come up.
KingCracker
The fact that this makes the news shows that its rare. People get complacent, it happens, it happens on the road all the time. People get complacent and accidents happen. This guy got complacent and didn't follow the rules.
ncoday
If your job is to instruct about firearms, then yes you better be damn perfect, you better be good enough at least that you don't point a firearm at anyone. that's not perfect, that's the stuff the student should know, it's not even being adequate, it's basic gun knowledge and handling. I know about gun safety and yes, I know you have to be extra careful. However, just because it is in relation guns does not mean you can expect perfection. No-one is perfect. Well, there is one person but that is a whole 'nother discussion. No-one can be perfect all the time, expecting perfection all the time makes people complacent. DocM
The student? No extra points for pain & bullet holes. No license until he meets the state qualifications. I can see a negligence lawsuit though.
