keep running out of memory....

Recommended Posts

I keep getting this "you are short on memory" message from windows 7.

Here is what resource monitor and task manager give me. It makes no sense...

I tried restarting a few  times but after an hour of normal usage, same thing happens. Is there a better tool for memory usage tracking?

It does make sense in a way that Working Set doesn't show all memory used by process. In fact, no tool is able to show that due to multitude of technical reasons.

Anyway, see if there are some unrecognized processes in that long list. Things like ramdisks, for example.

I just opened chrome to make this post... only extensions are adblock and dictionary.... I used microsoft's little "process explorer"  to get more details and it didn't' help. chrome was using a lot but no where near 16gb. more like 700mgs (i know that's still too high)

Excel needs to be open but it doesn't look like it's hogging resources. I have 4 instances of it open so I can use multiple monitors easily.

Can virtualbox cause this? I have 1 vm instance open which takes 3gb of system and doesn't show up in task manager. When I close it, it does free up about 2gb. but that still leaves about 13-(3 system) so 10 gb for applications? lets say 3 for excel+chrome and other crap. still have 7gb going to what???...

Here is what it looks like on a fresh boot with all the same applications running (to my knowledge) notice the bump, that's the VM turning on. in 10-20 hours I  can send you what it turns into... without me opening anything else.
