Original Story: Yesterday Microsoft made the disappointing announcement that the Xbox One would be delayed in eight countries. Given that the console is region-free and no longer requires an internet connection, this would suggest that it could be imported from neighboring countries. We've asked Microsoft about this and it explained that while the platform and all of its games are region-free, it will still require online payments in a supported type of currency.
"When the console launches this November, we will support Xbox One in 13 markets. Xbox One may be used in all countries, including the non-launched markets. In addition, Xbox One games are not region locked. Any Xbox One game purchased at retail can be used in any country on any Xbox One," said Microsoft in a statement.
"That said, there needs to be a valid payment method corresponding to a supported launch country in order for any transactions to occur over Xbox Live, and some content may not be accessible outside launch markets due to geographic content restrictions imposed by content right holders."
It's not a perfect workaround then, but it's better than nothing. Even without convenient access to the Xbox Live marketplace, players in countries affected by the delay will still be able to enjoy disc-based retail games to tide them over until their currency is supported.

 
 

It's totally different.

First - all games are WW signed. Not all 360 games are.

Second - The console will work everywhere (keeping in mind Power Supplies)

Third - You can use one of the 13 digital marketplaces corresponding to our launch markets, assuming you have a valid payment instrument for those countries. Lots of people in Europe specifically travel, move, and visit family.

Now, of course, if you were using Pre-Paid cards... :)

You will still find that music and video content can be geo-restricted based on licensing. (e.g. Netflix works only in supported countries)

Launch stock volume

Launch volumes are not really an issue. This was simply a software issue in terms of getting local language and voice support in the dash. it's pretty straightforward, but disappointing I know for people who are missing launch.

Obviously, I support people waiting for the official supported launch in the affected markets for the best experience ;)

Update for imported consoles

If the leak is true, then I am really glad that they are making account "migration" a thing of the past. Hope it comes down to Xbox 360 as well.

Oh wait, so they are claiming that the delay not from a worry related to manufacturing enough units but instead due to not having localization done in time for the other regions?

 

Well if that is true, then that seems like something they can fix quicker then a stock issue and could mean they launch in other regions relatively soon after the first regions get it.

Must say if the elimination of stupid account locales is true then this is a huge deal. I just migrated my former US account to where I live now to make things simpler and to send MS a message, but now it looks like they saw the light. If true, will be importing a console, as where I live uses US power plugs and electricity anyway.

I'll still wait to get it in Norway, while UK has pretty good in some way even better(6 years reclamation), it's just safer to buy expensive gear in Norway. easier to deal with potential service and support. better reclamation when out of warranty as it's the manufacturers job to prove it's not a manufacturing fault not the customers job to prove it is, essentially making every company treat our 5 year reclamation as 5 year warranty, it's just less trouble, the work isn't worth it for them.

I was about to point out that if you use pre-paid cards for things it should work regardless.  Also the locale thing is nice, it's actually just how it is in Windows now, you can change your locale to anything on the fly.  Great move with that, that means you can buy/import a UK system or w/e, use some prepaid UK cards to get money in your account and you're good to go.  Sounds doable for those who don't want to wait a few extra months, I actually think the delay isn't going to be as long as some thing, not for the EU anyways.   Will probably be summer 2014 for asia though, much trickier to do voice support for some things and so on.
