On Monday, we reported that a support page for Microsoft's free to play game "Age of Empires Online" revealed that the Games For Windows Live service would end on July 1, 2014, and with it comes the end of the game as well. The support page later removed that message so Neowin contacted Microsoft to get a confirmation.
We received a response from a Microsoft spokesperson on that topic today but unfortunately, the response was vague as to the fate of Games For Windows Live:
Yesterday, an Age of Empires support web page communicated that the free to play Age of Empires Online will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. We believe in Windows/PC gaming and have long-term plans to grow our support. We expect there to be transitions as we build out new investments, but we remain committed to bringing first party gaming services and games to Windows for years to come. We will share more details in the future. As you can see, the statement mentions the shutdown of "Age of Empires Online" but not of Games For Windows Live. When asked for clarification, the Microsoft spokesperson said that the company will be offering no further comment at this time.
