Teens charged after 'thrill kill' of Australian student

Recommended Posts

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged two teenagers accused of gunning down an Australian student in Oklahoma for the ?fun of it? with first-degree murder, and a third teen with being an accessory.

Officials say Christopher Lane, 22, who was visiting the U.S. on a baseball scholarship at East Central University, was jogging along a road in Duncan, Oklahoma, after visiting his girlfriend on Friday when he was shot in the back, allegedly by the teens.

Terri Moore from the Stephens County District Attorney?s office says 16-year-old Chancey Allen Luna and 15-year-old James Francis Edwards Jr. were charged as adults with first-degree murder. Both are being held without bond.

Bond was set at $1 million for 17-year-old Michael Jones, who allegedly drove the vehicle carrying the other suspects.  He was charged with the use of a vehicle in the discharge of a weapon and accessory to murder after the fact.

Though Jones was not charged with murder, he claimed in open court Tuesday that "he pulled the trigger." The judge ordered him to remain quiet and said it was not the day to discuss the case.

Police Chief Dan Ford said Lane appeared to have been chosen at random, saying in a variety of media interviews since Friday's killing that one suspect told officers that he and other boys were bored and that they followed Lane and killed him for "the fun of it."

"Lane went by a residence where these three boys were, they picked him as a target, they went out and got in a vehicle and followed him," Ford told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, according to AFP.

"[They] came up from behind and basically shot him in the back with a small caliber weapon, then sped away," Ford added.

Richard Rhodes, a builder who discovered Lane lying face down, said he was targeted with a .22 caliber revolver.

Police tracked the teens down using surveillance video from a business that is near the shooting scene, KOCO reports.

The teens face a maximum sentence of life in prison. They can be tried as adults, but they can't face the death penalty since they are under the age of 18.

What I love (being sarcastic) is that his dad said that he's a good boy and that he'd never do such a thing.. Yeah every parent of a ghetto piece of trash thug seems to say the damn thing. This makes me angry. This isn't even a gun issue this is a parenting issue. Good boy my ass.

yeah but unless they seen there parents go out and shoot someone for the fun of it then its not entirely there fault. its just the world we live in

Not entirely, no probably not.  However, they are also not without fault.

I don't believe for a second that there weren't warning signs the parents could have picked up on.

The parents didn't instill whats right and whats wrong. These kids weren't taught anything especially respect for another human being.

it's a shame that the death penalty isn't given to teenagers.

although, instead of a needle, we try a different approach. shoot all three in the back and leave them on the side of the road to die

Is it not?  They are being charged as adults.

Thats a load of crap, if they dont know at the age of 15 16,17 that killing someone is wrong that is not a parental issue, they obviously just dont care and are ###### and deserve to die, cus its morons like that in the world that bring it down

they are, however since they are not 18 years old, they can't face the death penalty. It really is a silly rule.

Go live in the ghetto and tell me what they think is right and wrong. There's A LOT of people that you would call ######. Why is it that less educated places and i'd have to say under parented places like inner cities have so much crime but places like rural area's that are poor don't have the same problems.. I'm willing to bet parenting has at-least a little to do with it.

The 'not caring' part is where the parental units failed miserably.

Once again going back to what KingCracker said.
