LG Display might have just made that full HD screen on your smartphone look not so sharp.

The South Korean LCD panel maker on Tuesday unveiled what it calls the world's first Quad HD (2,560x1,440-pixel resolution) smartphone display. Measuring 5.5 inches long and only 1.21 millimeters thick, the panel sports 538 pixels per inch, LG Display said.

LG Display claims the new panel has four times more pixels than 1,280X720 HD displays, producing Blu-ray-like video with clearer images and sharper contrast than today's panels.

"LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world's first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology," Byeong-koo Kim, the head of LG Display's IT and Mobile Development Group, said in a statement. "With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market."

LG Display did not indicate when consumers might expect to see the new screens on smartphones or which handset makers were lined up to buy the screens.

This is just getting ridicules?

No, it's not; we have yet to reach a plateau of Display technology. The reason to continue is justified simply by there being no reason to stop. I assure you we're not in the realm of absurdity yet, definitely not so with items such as the Oculus Rift relying on this technology to further beyond its current capabilities. QHD is not even close to absurb, in fact you could still see the individual pixels up-close; this tells me we should continue.

Perfection should always be the goal, even if its unattainable and/or absurd to some. The artificial limitations that you impose does nothing for technology.

Plus it's cool.

QHD/538 DPI on a 5.5" smartphone display is madness, it has no practical purpose whatsoever.

definitely not so with items such as the Oculus Rift

Still not sold on that one either?

May be improving the display technology not the pixel/resolution
