So let me play devils advocate here for a minute.
What are you doing on these free wifi connections - keep in mind that if you going to a https site then your already creating an encrypted tunnel between your device and the https site where all traffic is encrypted, or possible just the login info is encrypted.
Now if your just browsing websites, looking up news, viewing forum posts, etc. Then a vpn connection is prob not needed.
Now if your logging into websites that don't use https, or your worried about something hijacking your cookies that are not sent over https to gain access to say your facebook page then yes a vpn could prevent that from happening.
So it comes down to what you do on these wifi connections to be honest. And then what sites are you hitting even that might already be secured with https, of what your doing is all over https already then a vpn might be overkill.
But it is better safe than sorry so if your feeling that the local wifi might be nonsecure with people sniffing traffic, etc. Or compromised with a mitm sort of attack, then yeah a vpn to your home to secure all traffic going over the wifi might be a good idea.
