Exchange Transport Rules Questions

Recommended Posts

Is there any way to have Exchange transport rules accept an environment variable such as %username%?

what are you trying to do exactly?  Why would you want username vs display name or smtp address?

Just a quick and dirty way to stop anyone from sending out their logon name in say a phishing email. Usernames are easy enough to get, but they are usually accompanied by passwords. Even with environment variables passwords would be near impossible to filter.

So you want it to not send if they send their username?

with 2010 it should be %%UserLogonName%%

Thanks,

I saw in my research that you can use them to build a signature, just didn't know if they would work within the actual rule to prevent sending. Guess we'll just have to try. Thanks!

Does not work as filter criterion. Too bad. Would be quite useful.

You should also be able to make a transport rule sending those messages that contain that text to a mailbox.

Yes you can, but the rule text takes the variables as literal text unfortunately. Otherwise, Exchange's Transport rules are quite excellent and flexible. We do filter CC numbers and a few other things with them.
