Opinion on Ultra Wide Monitors vs 27'' 2560x1440

Recommended Posts

I am planning on upgrading my age old Dell Ultrasharp 24'' to something with a higher resolution. Not a 30'' as they are too expensive, but I am considering the 27'' line with 2560x1440 resolution or the Ultra Wide 29'' which recently caught my eye. Apart from Office, Surfing and email I watch the one or other movie (mainly use the TV for that via HDMI Out) and play the occasional game, though lately it's been mainly Flight Simulator X.

I was wondering what your opinion and experience is with these? What I never liked about the Full HD displays is that they are 1920x1080, whereas mine currently is 1920x1200. I find that those 120p make a noticeable difference to me. Or maybe it's just because I had my current monitor for so long and got used to it.

Do you guys have any Ultra Wide monitors? What is your opinion about them for day-to-day usage and gaming? Does it no longer bother you that they are so wide and not so high?

Looking forward to your opinions.

We have one of the 29" ultra wides, think of it as 2 monitors at 1920x1080 just side by side without a bezel between then. I'd go with the 27" 2560x1440 or a 30" 2560x1600 personally. The ultrawide is good for side by side window work.

I have a dell ultrasharp 24". It has 16:10 aspect opposed to 16:9. 16:10 will cause black bars when watching movies, but ki great for work and gaming. 16:9 is better for movies, but slightly less for hard core working and is also good for gaming. The best way to know is to test which monitor you like better

16:10 is always going to be better to work on. Also, I don't know about you, but past a certain point in width, on screen windows fade from my perhiperal enough that they might as well just in the background.

16:9 is great o work on, especially on larger screen.

as for a ultra wide, they may not be perfect for writing word docs on, but as a bonus, you can have word on one side and netflix or a webpage on the other side and work fluently between them. and when watching a proper cinema movie or playing a game you can watch the whole movie(yes the extremes on the side are meant to mostly be peripheral) or game with a proper wide view that includes your peripheral as well.

Then you have more heavy apps like Photoshop and 3DSMAX where you can fully utilize an ultra wide by having big viewports in the middle and all the toolboxes you need on the left and right.

I tried looking in stores to have a look at these monitors, but I can only find them online. Haven't found a store yet that has these on display.

I won't be really working on them, just day to day stuff and some gaming. I wouldn't be maximising windows like Internet Browser, Word, etc..., it would be just too big, already is on the one I have now. Which makes me wonder, now that I'm writing this, if I don't maximise it, I would keep the window in the middle of the screen, so that left and right would be empty space. Guess I would only be using the full size truly when gaming or watching a movie.

Hello,

I posted an earlier message here on Neowin discussing my experiences with a WQHD (2560?1440) display a half-year ago.  Since then, it's been working flawlessly.  Highly recommended.
