WaterDrinker
In case you didn't know, Berlin is the hipster capital of Europe: http://store.hipstery.com/products/the-berlin-hipster-kit Berlin Hipsters understand that the larger their vintage spectacles are, the higher their Hipster social ranking will be. http://travelsofadam.com/hipster-berlin-travel-tips/ Since Microsoft wants to be hip, they are opening in Berlin a massively oversized Microsoft store, which will also serve as a "start up incubator" and lobby HQ, with the public spaces designed especially for hipsters! This is the future of Microsoft, be ready! Screenies: The "digital eatery": http://www.microsoft.com/de-de/corporate/microsoft-berlin/galerie.aspx#The-Digital-Eatery The Microsoft themed Starbucks variant: The hip boss: Nothing says "Microsoft" more than walls full of hipster bands. Boring keynotes are touch-enhanced too! The future hipster customers are also shown: https://www.facebook.com/MicrosoftBerlin/posts/199241633585563 "Already participated in our contest? Just send us a photo of you with a personal Berlin connection. Then you have the chance to win a cup with your photo and a voucher for three hot drinks in the digital Eatery - the caf? Atomic Wanderer Chicken
Microsoft was cool before any of this anyways. Apple's fans and coolness is not permanent and will last as long as they keep their cool factor momentum going. Ian W 1 Share
vcfan
Microsoft was cool before any of this anyways. Apple's fans and coolness is not permanent and will last as long as they keep their cool factor momentum going. but this is neccesary to come across cool in the press, something apple has been enjoying alone. Microsoft can try to out Apple Apple, without actually being Apple. Everyone like us knows this, but the less tech savvy dont.
Atomic Wanderer Chicken
Microsoft was cool in being kind of uncool. Personally the hipster stuff is a turn off for me, and probably a lot of others as well. I personally prefer the old school Microsoft. PGHammer
However, what it seems more *consumers* want is for Microsoft to basically become another Google - not an alternative to Apple. Where Google differs from Apple is that Google is entirely a software+services company, and it makes NOTHING from software - it gives the software away and makes all the revenue (and most of the earnings) from services. How much does Google charge handset manufacturers for Android? Microsoft is being continually pressured - by their customers (not alone in the corporate/enterprise space; in fact, most of the pressure is coming from technology sites - including Neowin) into cutting prices, and especially on software. (The recent drumbeat of price cut demand on WindowsRT is, in fact, a prime example - WindowsRT is being compared to Android, not iOS. Never mind that RT hardware - even from Acer and ASUS, which are leaving RT - is miles above Android hardware; consumers are still trying to force Google and Microsoft, and specifically Android and RT, into the ring with each other. Why this incessant desire to insulate Apple?) WindowsRT was, in fact, designed to take on the iPad heads-up - so why is it that consumers are instead insisting that RT duke it out with Android? MikeChipshop Member Posted August 22, 2013 Member Share Posted August 22, 2013 Oh god no. Hipsters, like every generation of 'cool' before them, have a finite life ahead of them. Any company that jumps on a bandwagon to sell a few extra products will soon find themselves flailing. It's fine if hipsters embrace MS but MS should never embrace them. I personally prefer the old school Microsoft. I could not agree more, Chicken. Microsoft doesn't need to act like Apple to be perceived as "cool" or special. Blurry blue color schemes and blue screens of death? I'm pretty sure he wasn't referring to any of their operating systems.

Growled Member Posted August 24, 2013 Member Share Posted August 24, 2013 Personally, I think instead of trying to be cool and fresh, something they aren't, they should instead be what the are, traditional and geeky. Ian W 1 Share
