Xbox One examined, re-examined, & conclusions so far

Recommended Posts

Today, I decided to look at the Xbox One reveal, E3, & Gamescom all in succession. Examined all things Xbox across the world wide web, that came from Microsoft straight from Microsoft's staff themselves.

At the end of it all, the "180's", Indies, Mic, KINECT, insert complaint here... The Xbox alone is going to be a very nice piece of Tech to have.

And if it's all about the games, I say the Xbox One's opening launch lineup isn't half bad. Nothing AAA, but a lot of good games nonetheless. A lot of good games, is a good thing.

When you look at all it does, out of the box, it exceeds the 360 in every possible way. And designed to grow for the whole life of the console. Almost all of the things that are being shown, you will be able to do day 1 with your Xbox One if you chose to get one. With the exception of each retail unit being a Dev kit (release TBD)

All this Indie talk is driving me nuts personally. But every Xbox One being able to be a Dev kit (not yet implemented) is nuts. And I mean that in a good way.

I didn't care (and still don't) that it's not called a games console. Let it go that they didn't show games during the initial showing of the Xbox One. They didn't even have to bother with E3 being right around the corner.

If you hate Kinect that much, then be honest with yourself, and know that you never really wanted an Xbox One at all. Kinect and the Xbox One were built around, and into each other. And it seems that more people are trying to brake the bond of the 2 instead embracing it, or getting another console elsewhere.

There is more than enough juice in the Xbox One to last 10yrs. And left very open to expand along the way. The things you dont see or can't interact with, are what make the Xbox One so amazing. All the tech geeks know what I'm talking about.

When it's all said and done, I believe those who are willing and wanting to give Xbox One a chance, they will be more than satisfied with their investment.

XBOX ON.

Please chime in.

PC is definitely a different class all together. I'm a horrid PC gamer, so I tend to stick wit consoles.

I know its each to their own and I'm not trying to start a PC vs Console discussion here but it always makes me laugh when a PC gamer will mock the prices people pay for consoles but are happy to spend the money so frequently to keep up in the PC market.

When I built a gaming rig many years ago it was from the ground up, components such as CPU, Motherboard etc as well as Case, Monitor, keyboard etc and I easily spent ?1200 on what was a pretty good but not really top end spec.I would say within 3-4 years I wasn't able to select "high" on the graphic menu's of games anymore.

A console will run at the "highest" possible quality it is capable of with that game for the games at launch to the games at the end of the consoles 7-8 lifespan and given my figure above and the move expensive XB1 at half the price. I know consoles are a lot more restrictive and the modding community can give the oldest game a completely new feel so I'm not trying to argue that side of things.

I Just find it quite ironic that it usually comes down to price with some PC gamers who are probably spending 2-3 times the amount on their PC over the same lifespan of a console.

10 years for non-upgradeable, un-changeable SoC?

by 5 years Gaming PC rig will leave xbox one in the dust ...

Expand along the way?

since theres no expansion slot available, currently the only way to 'expand' is to use its limited amount of USB ports ...

The things you dont see or can't interact with ...

Personally I would prefer the return of customizable, modular, expandable, open MSX consoles with modernized hardware.

That would defeat the purpose of consoles entirely. If you want customizable and upgradable, you buy a PC.

I bought my PC 5 years ago.. it still runs strong.. don't need to constantly update it.  The reason consoles are different is because we CANT update them.  What we have is what we get.. I am positive if people could upgrade components they would.

Software expansion can only go so far.  Look at iPhone/Android each version gets more and more improvements.. and fewer and fewer devices can run them.  Eventually consoles can get to that point.

The PS3 had a hypervisor.. they aren't that special.. and don't make things unique for the xb1.  Also as has been discussed into infinity and beyond.. the servers allow for some things.. and give a couple new features.. but I don't think it will make or break this generation.

While the xb1 has it's unique features.. based on what I have seen... it is not the be all and end all of this generation, and may not even come out on top.  The future improvements, hardware enhancements, etc can be said for both consoles.

???

I was merely pointing out, for all the flak Microsoft has received.  The Xbox One is a very good piece of Tech.

PC is a different breed altogether.

And no, the X1 isn't the be all, end all.  but it's darn good from what i've seen so far.

Mobile app makers have to cater to multiple hardware manufactures and the amount of tablets, smartphones being pumped out.

There will not be a constant remake of Xbox's for 10yrs.    So developers know what they are dealing with on day 1 all the way to year 10.

Yes, it is good tech.  However, the vibe I got from your post was that XB1 was something special.  It just takes things other systems have had for a while and uses them in a different way.   I could plug a computer into a TV and get Skype while gaming.  I could use a Smart TV and get overlays.   I could use a Rogers PVR and get things going through my cable (phone calls, etc) appearing on the TV.

The PC is not a different breed, it is upgrade able, it doesn't have an end of life (assuming you regularly update the components).  Unless you buy a computer from the store.. the chances of a computer being 100% identical are slim, whereas a console is 100% the same all the time.

Also, with a device say.. iPhone.  There is 1 manufacturer, there is 1 OS developer, and they are the same.  However if you tried to run OS7 on a Gen1 iPhone it won't work.  The number of things added to iOS is just too much for a Gen 1 iPhone.  My point was there is a similar restriction on the Console.  The Underlying OS can only receive so many new features before you see it slow down.

Also, consoles do change over time.  While they are not entire overhauls.. they do change.  Harddrive size primarily.

Do I think the Xb1 is a good system?  Of course.. I mean it is definitely next gen worthy.  I just don't think it is bringing things to the table we have never ever seen before.

And you have just described all of the next gen consoles. They are all building on the advancements of the past, evolve ideas that have been around.

Saying something is 'special' or 'innovative' is a loaded statement.  Most people don't even agree on the meaning of those words in this context.  Is the X1 'special' because of an improved Kinect?  Is the PS4 'special' because it has a faster gpu?  Is any of it innovative?

Its all a subjective argument.  There is no yes or no, you can argue it back and forth all day.  Like you, I think the system is good, now whether its special or innovative, I really don't know.  That comes more from seeing it in use.

I agree fully.  I was just doing my own examination and re-examination based on things the OP Said.

Honestly it's not true anymore.

My PC can play all games without any trouble and it's kinda an old PC. I have an old Core i5 750 i bought 4 years ago. 4GB of ram i bought 4 years ago. The gpu i bought with this PC lasted me for 3 years. I upgraded the gpu last christmas mainly because the deal was awesome and the new gpu was coming with 2 free games i wanted to buy anyway. Basically when you factor in the price of the 2 games and the money i got for selling my old gpu i effectively got the new gpu for around 40-50$. It was my christmas gift for myself ...

This old 4yo PC with a new gpu is still going strong and honestly i think it'll continue for another year without too much trouble. Since i work as a freelance web designer i need a PC anyway and i need a good one Creative Suite doesn't like crap PC. So basically the only spending on PC i do for games is the gpu and these days i upgrade every 3 years and with all the games Amd and nVidia gives it's not hard to find a good deal.

Now back on subject yeah the One is a lot more interesting now than it was last spring. My 2 main problems with it was addressed. The 24 hours online check is gone and we don't need to have kinect connected at all time.

This said i still firmly believe the TV stuffs will be worthless in canada as it's always the case with TV thingies coming from USA. I still don't really care about kinect. Not that i think it's a bad device just that i don't really care for it. The console is still 100$ more than the PS4. I can buy one only so the price difference will play a role. The RRoD and bad HDMI port i had last gen with 2 of my 3 XBox 360 consoles was kind a cold shower too. Microsoft also did not address at e3 one of the problem i had with the 360. Too much PC games, too much shooters and not enough quirky old school console titles (like Journey and such).

I'll wait spring 2014 or fall 2014 to decide which one i'm buying by i'm still leaning toward the PS4. But yeah the One is looking better now than 3 months ago.

Since they have made the changes to make this a more reasonable purchase, I am sure I will buy one. Probably next year.

I don't watch TV and films, and I don't have any use for the Kinect nonsense, but as long as I can play the new games that come out for it I will be more than happy to own it. It's the only logical choice, since the latest releases won't work on the 360 anymore. I do dislike the idea that I'm paying for all this extra crap I don't want or need or will ever use, but that's life I suppose. Still better (to me) than switching sides and getting the PS4 and starting over with a brand-new profile, abandoning the Live account I've had and built up for years.

I still think people are missing the bigger picture for the tv stuff.  The whole use it with a cable box feature doesn't even seem to be their main strategy.  That main strategy is providing the content directly, not relying on a box hooked up to it.  The leaked programming deals should be enough to illustrate the long term goal. My guess is that they decided to offer the tv box feature mearly as a stop gap since it was simple and cheap to implement.

Regarding the choice of which system, since you aren't interested in Kinect, then you have to look at the rest of the software features and the games lineup to see if its worth $100 more.  Pretty simple.

Regarding the game lineup, I actually think MS has done a good job showing a wide range of content, as in offering games in genres that are not fps.  If you compare it with the ps4 lineup, I'm seeing two similar lists as far as genres.  The only difference I see is that Sony has announced more indie titles than MS has.
