Huh ?  XP  was released in the store on October 25th 2001 -- I was there in 'line'.

Windows XP release now set for late October
May 10, 2001|By From Tribune news services.

SEATTLE ? Windows XP, Microsoft Corp.'s new version of its personal computer operating system, will be released in late October, in time for the holiday season but too late for the back-to-school crowd.

The world's No. 1 software company had previously said the product would go on sale in the second half of the year.

XP was fun, I miss customisable bootscreen (mine was a third party one, forget who's<used a batmobile of course>) and the ability to change the startup melody

And the endless fight against viruses, spyware, and other malware

and the random bsod's

and the fact that the same bluetooth adapter in this machine actually worked as intended when this machine used to run xp :p

I guess in Windows years, Windows XP is 90 something now! I had to deal with many viruses on XP and some where I had to reinstall the OS. I have gotten Windows XP to run on almost any machine that met the minimum requirements! It was a dependable OS and I used it through school and everything. Windows XP had its share of problems, but in the end it was a trusty OS!  Cheers to a happy retirement XP next year!

I had very few 'reinstall' viruses.

Either AVG caught them, or I stopped the bad process and Deleted. :)

There's some really gnarly ones out there, I've seen one that wouldn't allow you to launch any .exe's at all even in safe mode, and it had whole suite of "fake" programs, like fake task manager, fake regedit etc...

whoa whoa whoa whoa  you can't do that any more!?

It's hard-coded into a resource DLL now. You can still change it, just takes a few more steps. (Or get a third party tool to do it for you.)

I never get the reason why Microsoft decided that you are to deprived from win9x bootscreen style.

so, yeah the "you-must-your-computer-the-way-WE-want-it-to--any-you-must-like-it" attitude already there since windows XP, although not as big as say... Win 8.

You can still change the boot graphic too... it's not as easy as just replacing a bitmap but personally you're in either the "who cares" category so it doesn't matter anyway, or you're going to be modifying other things besides the bootscreen anyway so you're already comfortable changing system files.

New software is being designed so it's not overly complicated, as no software should be. Complexity isn't good for anyone.

So would you say the new movie maker is better than the old one with the time line?

Meh it's just for home users to fart around with home movies anyway, they're both crap for anything remotely serious.. if you needed a proper video editor neither version would be the first pick regardless. And if you reeeeealy want it that bad you can get the XP version running on 7 or 8 in seconds, like so..

There is a timeline-esque feature already in the 2013 version.

I wish XP never existed or that I skipped it and bought a new Windows Vista computer. I started using it well into its shelf life - in late 2004 or early 2005. I have fonder memories of Windows 98 tbh. The best thing of XP is that it is NT-based, yet some things are somewhat similar to Windows 98 (e.g. the overall look, some programs like the Address Book and the NotePad are almost the same like the ones in 98). Apart from that I prefer Vista. XP's Luna looked obsolete and tacky from day one, compared to Linux and Mac OS X. Longhorn is what should've been launced in 2001-2004 instead and Windows 8 should've been launched in 2009-2011. However, it seems that from a while MS are quite slow with their releases. :)
