New PS+ member; questions

Recommended Posts

So last night I decided to sign up for PS+. I figured since I'm going to get a PS4 eventually (and possibly a Vita) I might as well start accruing those free games now and get a little more life out of my PS3 in the meantime.

My questions have to do with the current offer that Sony is promoting for PS+. If you go to the website it says that by signing up you get 12 PS3 games and 6 Vita games. Are those games unlocked for your account forever just by signing up?

I remember reading that every so often Sony chooses a new set of games to choose from for the "free" games.  But you were limited to two or something. And you have to choose those two games and download them in order to bind them to your account.

Is that still the case with this offer? Do I need to download each of these 18 games in order to keep them? If so, how can I do that for the Vita games if I don't have a Vita yet?

Unfortunately, Sony's website isn't very descriptive or helpful in answering these questions. So if anyone can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it.

Similar topic, but not specific to PS+. I also bought Journey last night after signing up for PS+. However, I didn't see a full game download in my library. All I saw was the demo (600ish mb) and a "full game unlock" item that was about 100kb. Is that how you get the "real" game? Or did something not register properly with my purchase?

the thing about picking 2 games was the promo that Sony did last year after their PSN maintenance and hacking issue. that has nothing to do w/ PS+

What you'll want to do is download the games you want now (any or all) so they'll 'link' to your account. if Sony removes those 'free' games, you can still redownload them in the future from your account settings.

if you want, you can download and immediately delete them. you just need that record of download on your account.

Also, i'll try to sell you on the Vita b/c the free games are pretty incredible. Uncharted and Gravity Rush have been free since inception, so you'll want to get those in case they ever remove them.

Unfortunately your S.O.L on that one. It's annoying as i'm in the same boat but vice-versa in respect of the PS3 games which i'd like to link to my account when they appear for download...

I "bought" all the vita games even though I don't have a Vita. Just hit download and then cancel it. You don't actually have to download them, or the ps3 ones for that matter. Just "download" any game you want and then cancel it as soon as it starts. It'll then say "purchased".

That sounds right to me. I can't remember as I bought Journey a long time ago now, but a lot of games that offer a demo then offer the full game as an unlock. Basically, you have all the files for the full game already downloaded but until you run the unlock file you're only going to be able to play a to a certain point.

I have had an account for a few months now and I can say that while at first you get a lot of games the turn over for new games is slow. Take your time playing them lol but its still worth the money.

Thanks for the replies. So even though the PSN website says "get these games when you sign up" you still have to download them? I figured, I just didn't want to go through that whole process if I didn't have to. Thanks for the clarification.

I'm excited to play when I get home tonight, now that I know nothing got messed up. I've heard nothing but good things.

I love it, it's a brilliant game. I showed it to a friend not so long ago and he went and got a PS3 just for that.

Hmm, maybe I'll play it tonight as well...or one of the myriad of games that I've acquired thanks to PS+. There are some that I've downloaded that I've not even touched, and I put down The Last of Us and never got round to picking it up again. I have some work to do.

Right now there are the current games for free.

As a PSN Plus memeber basically you "Buy" those games for free, and they are then connected to your account.

Each week they usually remove some and add new ones. so each week you just sign in and "Buy" the newly offered titles.

You can add all the current games right now, but you do not need to download now, you can download them whenever you want.

You may only add, download or play they games as long as your a PSN+ subscriber. If your subscription lapses or you cancel it, you will no longer have access to these games. If you re-subscribe you will then have access to all the games you have previously added.

Anything you pay extra for (themes, avatars, games with a special PSN+ price) will be availble whether you have an active PSN+ account or not. For example a month or so ago they had Mortal Kombat on sale for 10$, or 5$ for PSN+ members. If you bought it, then it will always be available even if you no longer subscribe to PSN+

This site usually lists whats new, whats coming and what leaving in the future. http://blog.us.playstation.com/tag/playstation-plus/

Slightly annoying as I missed the free Battlefield 3 last month now. Grr...

In fact, I believe you'll be able to use the PSN Store on your PC to "reserve" Drive Club once the PS4 launches, even if you don't have a PS4 (alongside whatever PS4 games that end up being offered).  Then, whenever you buy one down the line (assuming you maintain your PS+ account), you'll be able to download it then.

Basically you're offered 12 PS3/PSN games at any one time, with six or eight of them being kept in the offer for a year or so, and the other four rotate out with four new ones each month.  You have access to all the games made available during your subscription.

For instance, I bought my membership when the Instant Game Collection was first announced, and got Just Cause 2, Laura Croft: Guardian of Light, Little Big Planet 2, and Ratchet & Clank All 4 One.  Those will always be available to me while I have a PS+ account, even to download to another PS3 or whenever the PS4 supports backwards compatibility through Gaikai.  But they are not available to you as they have left the IGC.

A couple of months ago, Battlefield 3 was available, and I "bought" it but never downloaded it (I will later, but I have a lot of other ###### to play, but I just haven't felt like it).  But since I've "purchased" it, I can download it at any time as long as I have an active PS+ account.

Since this thread is about ps+ questions, I thought I would ask this here.

When I get my ps4, I'll be using PS+, and that means using it on my ps3 as well.

On the ps3, do I get access to all of the free titles that they have offered up to that point, or is it just the titles offered at the time I sign up and forward as long as I keep an active subscription?

At the time you sign up until you quit the subscription.  You don't get access to older titles removed from PS+

I signed on the other night and just Download/Cancelled all of the free games until they each said "Purchased" in the store menu. I assume that means they are now forever bound to my account. So, yay! I just got several hundred dollars worth of games in 10 minutes for $18.

Next up, Journey. I never got around to it the other day like I wanted to, but I'm definitely going to make time this weekend to play it.

Are you planning on doing a monthly subscription? The only reason I ask is because, as others have said, once your subscription runs out you will not be able to play the games until you subscribe again.

Also, buying a year subscription might sound costly, but it ends up saving you money in the long run.

a yearly sub is the way to go if you havent got one already.

it will also carry over when you get a PS4

If you go to the Sony Online Entertainment website you can "purchase" the PS+ content that is free without needing to download at all. Saves having to wait for the PS3 to catch up with what you're doing.
