Good bye Windows Phone, Welcome Android

Recommended Posts

Hello Friends,

today I decided to leave windows phone and change to android. today I got the Nexus 4 and honestly I can see, that the device looks promising. And the price today is just $199, I know a new version is coming up, but I can only buy a cell phone at that price, so I think was a good deal.

I'm totally new on Android, is there any software I need to download, in order to sync music, photos, etc? I will setup my cloud HDD, but will be good to have in the computer as well.

Anything I should be aware of? when moving from WP to Android? In case  break up Android, how can I restore it? I mean any urls to where to go to find android guides, tutorials, etc. will be really awesome.

Why I moved from WP to Android?

First reason: APPS. windows phone does not have the apps my brother have, the quality of the apps on windows phone is terrible. really terrible.

Second reason: Bored, really. let's be honest, no background, basic colors for the boxes, all is square and bored. Open an close apps is just terrible.

Third Reason: 100+ more reasons.

so any idea or hint or suggestion, technical aspect or software aspect, please let me know.

Thank you.

I'm sure you will get the standard:

Root it
Unlock the Loader
Flash a Custom Rom

And while I did all that on my phone, and would recommend it.. I would suggest going to xda-developers.com and reading their forums.

Wait...are you talking about you or your brother?

APPS. windows phone does not have the apps my brother have

this is probably the funniest reason ever to switch your OS.

the quality of the apps on windows phone is terrible. really terrible.

..so you switched to Android? Ok.

100+ more reasons.

I likes me some mystery :ninja:

------------

Good for you, just making fun of you OP. no hard feelings. Enjoy your new phone. :)

I made the same jump last weekend, changing my Lumia 800 for a Lenovo A820 dual-sim, quad-core mobile from China and I'm loving it so far. You won't regret it at all.

Cool! thanks for the good wishes.

Wondering if there is some kind of "iTunes" software for PC or Mac, that will help to sync your device. Provide status of the Phone, grab the pictures and copy them, sync music.

Actually, that is a rather LARGE reason why Android is popular - it's called word of mouth.  (The same applied to all the iOS devices - it even was responsible for early growth of Windows.)

Good press is the opposite of bad press - and can be at least as effective.

Congratulations on creating a topic about switching and WELCOME to Android!

Suggestions-

Customize everything you possibly can. This is what Android is all about. No need for boring squares with no background and basic colors when you can have animated wallpaper, glossy icons and krazy widgetz!

Utilize all 4 cores. If you don't, you're better off with an iPhone.

Purchase an extra battery. Power users use power.

Choose wisely: 700,000 high risk apps are waiting for you in the Play Store.

Again, watch out for malware!

Spend plenty of time researching Android as you tinker with it. You will develop a mutual relationship with your phone as it controls you as much as you control it.

Keep your Windows Phone around in case you screw up your Android while tinkering with it.

You have heard it now... I love my Nokia 920. Moved from iPhone 4 to WP7.5->WP8. Never looked back since. So there you have it, you have heard of someone enjoying a WP. If you read this... :)

For testing purposes I have Androids, WP, BlackBerry and iPhones to test .. and TBH, MS makes it easy to flick between the 3 big players (iOS, WP8, JB) on a regular basis. App quality is so-so in many apps, regardless of platform. My current fave phones are the HTC One which I use on a day to day basis (Viper 2.1 ROM) but when I get home, I usually swap the SIM into my Lumia 920. All have their strengths and weaknesses, anyone who says otherwise is misleading themselves.

Stear clear of malware by downloading from the Play Store and not random sites.  Be smart on what you click on and you will be fine.  I have been using Android since the first device was released and never ran in to any malware and neither have the many people I know who use Android.  Be smart, and you will be ok.

And tinkering with Android these days is idiot proof.  Even if you screw something up, there are many helpful people here and over at XDA who are more than willing to help no questions asked.  its not like it was during the early days and even if you do happen to brick your phone, there are many ways to unbrick it.

Hope you enjoy your devices.  I have heard the N4 was a good phone.

And contrary to another posted here....there is not 700k malware apps in the app store.  That is the total number that was found and most have been removed.  Again, stay downloading from the Play Store and you will be fine.  Dont listen to others scare tactics.

Heh, I made the reverse choice that the OP did, switching from Android (Galaxy S3) to WP (Nokia Lumia 925). Happy so far.

Either way, best rom I can suggest for Android is CyanogenMod. That's just me though. You should also keep an eye on Ubuntu Touch.

I don't have any problems downloading from the Play Store..

700k over the lifetime of the market.  700k currently would mean the majority of the apps are malware...which isnt so.

Phone choice is subjective, you should choose what phone and OS you like. Android, iOS and Windows phone os offer different features, kinds of apps and more.

I find the stock ROM of my Nexus4 to be perfectly fine.

Nothing wrong with flashing something else, but I don't think it's a must on this device.

As an android user who's getting bored of android, may I ask what phone you used to have?

Nothing wrong with android, just personally I miss a mobile os that no longer exists.

Please could you spare a minute to tell me what the down side of windows phone and model was for you

You can pm me this information if you would prefer.

Could you try and be alittle more misleading? This wasn't misleading enough. Even the headline on that page states

More than 700,000 malicious Android apps wreak havoc on the web

Then goes on to say "Malicious apps, some of which can be found on the Google Play Store, could steal your personal information"

The fact is if you ONLY get your apps from the play store then you couldn't be much safer. It's when you allow your phone to install from unkown  sources you really open yourself to this.

The Google Music app is awesome. You can upload up to 20,000 songs to the cloud and access it anywhere online using the google music app. You can simply be work and go to google music on the web and listen to your whole library on the cloud :)

Chrome is awesome..no worries about losing your favorite websites. as long as you are signed in lol

I recommend trying new launchers. A launcher is like a new homescreen, a UI replacement basically. Some launchers to try are Nova Launcher and Smart Launcher. I love Smart Launcher. It is extremely quick to get places, and the pro version (paid) version allows for widgets.

Weather: Beautiful Widgets or HD Widgets (I think both paid)

News: Flipboard (free)

Reddit: BaconReader (free/paid)

Convertbee for converting between units (free)

An awesome feature is you can browse Android apps on the Google Play website, and once you sign in with your device into Google, you can download apps from the website and it will install on your phone instantly. You can also browse through the app store on the phone.
