Lumia 925 on AT&T: Should I Buy One or Wait for Something Else?

Recommended Posts

The Nokia Lumia 925 is coming to AT&T.

I've been waiting for it for quite some time.  Wikipedia indicates it was released in May 2013.

This means the phone has been around for a few months, and I'm wondering if Nokia is on the verge of replacing it.  So here's what I'm wondering:

1.  Do we have any idea when the Lumia 1520 (or whatever it will be called) announcement might be?  They could announce a few phones at once, and if the announcement is coming soon, I'd rather wait and see.

2.  Are there any big steps that any of you can imagine in the next generation of Lumias?  I'm guessing at least some of them could have ~1080p screens.  Is there any other advancement you can imagine?

3.  Overall, do you think it's wise to buy now or to wait?  (We all have our opinions here, and I'm just looking to bounce some ideas around.)

Thank you, everyone.

I would expect to see the new generation of Windows Phones to be announced in the next month or two.  We already know that Samsung and HTC have announcements planned and Nokia is sure to as well.  GDR3 is coming in October and will include support for 1080p screens and quad-core processors (if that's important to you) and at least some of the new phones will include these.

Of course, there's always something new around the corner and it's sometimes easier to just buy what's available now.  You also know that the L925 will receive updates for the next two years which is nice.  However, if I was in your position I'd probably wait a little bit longer to see exactly what is coming.

Best to wait, at least till November, by then we'll know about the new GDR3 phones coming out.

So Nokia will likely announce its new phones in November?  Since GDR3 is mostly to enable 1080p and quad-core processors, I'm not certain that's something for which I want to wait.  Do I really need a 1080p screen and a quad-core processor on a phone?  My current phone is 480p with a single-core processor.  I would think a 1080p screen and a quad-core processor would go mostly unneeded while draining my battery life.  I don't know.  I'll have to think about it.

No, you don't need a quad core, especially on Windows phone.  1080p is a matter of how big of a phone you're getting, if it's <5" there's really no point.

However, you don't know what else Nokia is going to bring to the table. So it might be worth it to wait.

I just read that the Galaxy S4's 1080p looks visibly better than the Galaxy S3's 720p screen largely because the AMOLED screens on both phones are PenTile.  The Lumia 925 is also PenTile AMOLED, so maybe I should wait for a 1080p PenTile AMOLED screen.

Later this month we should find out about their upcoming GDR3 Lumia phones so if you can wait you might as well.
