simonlang
i have been using lubuntu 12.10 since a few months and would like to try something new. is there any distribution out which would you recommand to me? while my system is pretty good 4GB ram and amd athlon II x2 250 cpu, i prefer the os to be slick and light. i had many linux distries in the past, ubuntu, arch, debian, fedora, etc.
Mindovermaster Moderator Posted August 29, 2013 Moderator Share Posted August 29, 2013 I would personally reccomend Debian 7 Wheezy. I have been using it for a few months now. Ubuntu 13.4 previous to that. But that's just me. ;)
Ambroos
If you want something new to try, Elementary OS is a lot of fun, very fast and looks really good! AJerman, Sadelwo, GrayW and 1 other 4 Share
redvamp128
You do know that you can install other distributions- desktops using the same install... for example you had Lubuntu - and you want to run Kubuntu (KDE) (all you have to do is install the kubuntu desktop) you can do that through the command line . Though distribution wise- for a change of pace I would and have used open Suse .. but Debian is not bad either.
Growled Member Posted August 29, 2013 Member Share Posted August 29, 2013 If you want to get wild and crazy and try something completely out of the Debian/Ubuntu family, give Manjaro Linux a try. http://manjaro.org/ It's Arch based but using Linux Mint as it's guide. I am trying it out and I really like it.
simonlang
i just prefer to do a clean install again - i think a few things are already messed up plus there are some programs i have installed for university work i dont need anymore now. and i have nothing to do so i either start to drink again heavily or i try out some new linux. what about linux mint kde? manjaro installer fails for me. Mindovermaster Moderator Posted August 29, 2013 Moderator Share Posted August 29, 2013 I find Mint to be a little too bloated, nothing like Ubuntu, but still.
redvamp128
Depending on your system- OPEN SUSE http://en.opensuse.org/Features This release delivers proper UEFI support for x86_64 hardware and experimental support for Secure Boot enabled hardware. Aletheia
Elementary OS Luna is clean, elegant, light, and fast. Try it live, and you might find it very enjoyable. http://elementaryos.org/ NOTE: it asks for donation, but you can download it for FREE. Just click on, "Download Luna for Free" under the donation box. I use it on my netbook eee PC 1000HA (60GB SSD) and it is so fast, I am very impressed. Aergan
Mint is worth a try coming from any *buntu. OpenSUSE gets my vote for an alternative to Ubuntu based distros.
simonlang
hello everyone. i just have finished backing up my files and i am now using the live system of elementary os. i am totally in love! short question again, i hope for a quick answer as i really want to install it as fast as possible. what filesystem to go for? so far i always have used ext4 because its proven and safe. what about reiser, btrfs, jfs or xfs? anything faster or safer or better? Ambroos
EXT4 is fine for nearly everything, no reason to go do special stuff with the others. Elementary is all about good defaults, if you're not sure just leave it on the default settings. Growled 1 Share

However now that piece of ###### is not booting anymore. See screenshot. Im fuming. This was meant to be a half day job. Half day is over and im still on nothing...
