British man charges telemarketers to call him

Would be great to have a phone with LCD screen with a option of "Know the Caller" / "Don't Know the Caller" select one based on the Phone Number and if option is "Dont Know the Caller" then caller is charged at the rate to talk to you.

That could happen I suppose, but all my friends have cellphones and call me on that. And there is always text. I might change my mind if something like that does happen to me but until then.....

Yea I thought about that too. The reason I learned to answer even then was because my sister worked at a hospital for a time and wasn't allowed to carry her cellphone so when she did call it was from one of their lines. Not really a big deal but with my luck, I wouldn't answer and it was important.

I've been getting calls from those scammers in India lately. Guy named "Mike" with a heavy Indian accent says that there have been reports of Windows using experience slow downs. Tells me that I may not know it, but every time I get online I download malware which is why my computer slows down and sometimes freezes and I can visit the "official" site to check for that. I have a speech sitting at my phone now that I read off every time they call. It involves explaining that I have 16 gigs of ram and a 6core processor so good luck slowing my computer down, but also I have two bachelor degrees in computer fields and I work for a software company as a Manual and Automation Software QA and Testing Engineer, so I make more money in a day than he does in a week. That usually does the trick but maybe I will add something at the end of it saying that this is a premium line and they have been getting charged the longer the call went on. May just scare them off.

It is amazing how many people in India are called Mike though. They were clearly different people since each had a different sounding voice.

I've always wanted to set up a virtual PC and liberally sprinkle it with bait files (honeypots?) named things like "important_passwords.xls" and "bankaccountdetails.zip", and these files would be full of  trojans, viruses and rootkits that I have collected.

I, posing as someone completely inept in computers, would then ask my friendly spam caller for help opening these files because Excel (or whatever) is very very slow when opening them and I'd like them to open these files, get all my passwords out and put them into a new file for me.

Unfortunately I've never quite got around to setting this up...

(Related question - what's it called when you have a zip file that expands to infinity? I want one of those as a bait file as well :D :shiftyninja:  )

Problem is, even though what they are trying to do is illegal, you doing that to them is just as illegal. Now they get to sue you.

I'll countersue!

But seriously, how would that be illegal? I'm curious because law is not my strong point so I'd like to know, maybe if you could give a few pointers? (Mind you, since not in or from the U.S. - I'm from down under, so any links you might have had may very well not be particularly applicable, but I'd still find them interesting)

Distributing trojans, viruses, and root kits with malicious intent is considered hacking and illegal by international law. It is the kind of thing that gets you deported/extradited.

For a link.
