What are your Must-have Windows applications?

Anything else is fluff and for the most part unnecessary or used so rarely I forget to install it till it's actually needed, at least that's all I've installed so far on this new system, don't need an uninstaller, don't need any system utilities, do all my system maintenance manually, let Windows defrag automatically, AV takes care of malware also, no need for a separate program. Random Google apps, might install notepad ++ again just becasue I like how it works vs plain Notepad

 

Need to install Foobar and MPC:HC and possibly some CD/DVD burning program, and Origin to get into the BF4 Beta

I'm confused why so many still feel a need to hose their systems with so many "security" suites? Am I the only one surviving off my common sense, and built in protections?

The drawback of a standard built in protection (I guess you have  win 8 in mind), is that the same vulnerabilities will spread everywhere.

I guess it's easier to develop a zero day exploit, when everyone have the same protection : if  you manage to attack a  pc, then you can attack them all. Not to mention that the rating of MSE  has been downgraded these last years.

 

The best protection I  have : if there's a doubt, restore system with acronis image. 

 

I  should have mentioned acronis image in my much needed software list, although I prefer to back up/restore from bootable DVD only.

At work, all I need is Google Chrome and Office. At home, as long as I have Chrome, Gimp, VLC, Libreoffice, and Handbrake I can do almost everything I want/need to do.

I would call "Java" a pretty common attack vector, and Windows 7/8's amazing built in protection doesn't seem to crap to mitigate it.

Which is a problem with Java... I don't know anyone that uses Java anymore (not even my IT buddies), so without it, those vulnerabilities don't exist on those systems.

 

But for the smarter people on here who know not to click things or download strange attachments, there's still a prevalent amount of "security" 'junklets' being used. Ya'll can mitigate the use of that stuff with better methods that wouldn't hose your system like those things do.

 

Either way, I'll stop thinking out loud now. :/

Which is a problem with Java... I don't know anyone that uses Java anymore (not even my IT buddies), so without it, those vulnerabilities don't exist on those systems.

Dell iDRACs (remote access controllers) use Java for the remote console/media, at least on non-Windows clients machines. Also, doesn't Minecraft use Java for its runtime environment?
