What are your Must-have Windows applications?

Recommended Posts

Chrome (Extension: Adblock, Feedly, CDM, Pocket, Chromecast, Tapiture, YTO)

Steam

some form of AV because we all make mistakes from time to time

Google Drive/Dropbox

Anything else is fluff and for the most part unnecessary or used so rarely I forget to install it till it's actually needed, at least that's all I've installed so far on this new system, don't need an uninstaller, don't need any system utilities, do all my system maintenance manually, let Windows defrag automatically, AV takes care of malware also, no need for a separate program. Random Google apps, might install notepad ++ again just becasue I like how it works vs plain Notepad

Need to install Foobar and MPC:HC and possibly some CD/DVD burning program, and Origin to get into the BF4 Beta

I'm confused why so many still feel a need to hose their systems with so many "security" suites? Am I the only one surviving off my common sense, and built in protections?

The drawback of a standard built in protection (I guess you have  win 8 in mind), is that the same vulnerabilities will spread everywhere.

I guess it's easier to develop a zero day exploit, when everyone have the same protection : if  you manage to attack a  pc, then you can attack them all. Not to mention that the rating of MSE  has been downgraded these last years.

The best protection I  have : if there's a doubt, restore system with acronis image.

I  should have mentioned acronis image in my much needed software list, although I prefer to back up/restore from bootable DVD only.

That didn't answer my question.

You just got done saying these vulnerabilities aren't a problem like the xp days

"Yes, but Windows 7/8 have amazing built in protections that can mitigate more common attack vectors. This isn't like the old, XP days."

I would call "Java" a pretty common attack vector, and Windows 7/8's amazing built in protection doesn't seem to crap to mitigate it.

Which is a problem with Java... I don't know anyone that uses Java anymore (not even my IT buddies), so without it, those vulnerabilities don't exist on those systems.

But for the smarter people on here who know not to click things or download strange attachments, there's still a prevalent amount of "security" 'junklets' being used. Ya'll can mitigate the use of that stuff with better methods that wouldn't hose your system like those things do.

Either way, I'll stop thinking out loud now. :/

As far as "must haves" it would be these 3 for ABSOLUTE must haves:

Malwarebytes

SuperAntiSpyware

CrapCleaner

As far as what I usually always install anyway, it would be:

MPC-HC media player

Irfanview

Auslogics defragger

CDBurnerXP

Sumatra pdf reader

Opera browser

Seamonkey browser

That's about it. I keep my machines lean, mean and VERY clean!!

I do have Bitdefender AV installed, but usually run without an AV. Currently just testing this AV.

Windows 8.1

Process Explorer (the very first program I run when the system starts up, and it remains running all the time)

Firefox Nightly 64-bit (I'm a tab hoarder and have over 2000 tabs open, and the only browser that can handle that is a 64-bit Firefox)

Windows Live Mail 2009 (all subsequent versions broke ">" quoting for replies, which for a plain-text e-mailer like me, is a deal-breaker)

Pidgin

VLC

Notepad2

ContextConsole (there is a LOT from the command console, and I also have a bunch of useful command-line tools installed in my %PATH%)

HashCheck

Office 2010 (what's with those ALL CAPS in 2013?!)

7-Zip

WinRAR

PaintShopPro X4 (free after rebate)

TrueCrypt

WinSCP

ImgBurn

I do not pollute my systems with any sort of anti-virus trash. Windows Defender and Firewall are all disabled.

I don't like Metro, either. The only Metro apps I use are Weather, Minesweeper and Wordament. Everything else was cleared out of Start.

the Metro Mail app for light email review and quick responses. Thunderbird for management.

Firefox (both desktop and the Metro beta)

OpenTTD

once 8.1 is released, StartisGone will be added to my must-have list.

Nero

Minecraft

TVersity

Office 2007 on my laptop, Openoffice on my desktop (used less often)

XBMC

Dell iDRACs (remote access controllers) use Java for the remote console/media, at least on non-Windows clients machines. Also, doesn't Minecraft use Java for its runtime environment?
