Microsoft: Xbox Live Gold Not Needed for Xbox One TV Features

Recommended Posts

microsoft already said this a long time ago, when the console was first revealked, but then stories started showing up,like on the front page of this site, saying how you need xblg for the guide, where nowhere did it say its exclusive to xblg, only that there are special features, like custom channel lists.

Does that mean Netflix and similar apps as well?

I doubt Netflix and other streaming apps fall into the category of "TV" but with all the changes MS has been doing of late they could, if they really wanted to win PR points, drop all the apps that already require users to pay a subscription for like Netflix off of Gold.

They could then add other things to Gold which would make people more interested in paying for it outside of getting MP, like, a free game a month or maybe gold members get access to sell their digital copies to others for a small fee, something like 2% of the total goes back to MS/Developers.

MS needs to do this if they want to be the to go to device in the living room for all kinds of people, whether they are gamers for the casual or core market or media enthusiasts.

No additional costs for services that are free elsewhere or consumers will take their business elsewhere.

MS has to be carefule what they consider 'Gold Worthy' and what isn't...

There has to be some kind of happy medium... The some what strict rules are part of the reason we are getting a better Xbox Live with Xbox One release... But also don't want to be too strict, that it just turns people off...

They also can't let consumers temper tantrum on the floor and let them get their way every time, or Live could crumble slowly but surely... First thing consumers will say is "Well, you didn't have to listen to me"

Seems like the new Live is a bit more loose than it is now...

Something interesting I saw in this article:

Right now, no. If you look at what?s going on in TV there?s a lot of innovation and a lot of shaking things up. Cable TV and app based TV and IP based TV and who knows what?s next. We?re not just focusing on current TV models because those models are changing.

So you?re prepared for the so-called cable cutters?

Absolutely. Our vision is that these new TVs systems are all blended. The idea is to use them all. With the HDMI in, the system will adapt to the future. HDMI via cable box for now, but we have Xfinity and HBO Go already. The Xbox One can use any broadcast source that they come up with.

This points to something I have said before.  People seem to think MS' entire media and tv content plan is about the hdmi input to use with cable boxes.  The reality is they are doing that now for legacy support, but the ultimate goal is supporting all sorts of methods to get the content, including offering it directly to customers via tv content that MS produces for the service.  All of that takes time to roll out, so they are supporting what they can at the moment.

Xbox Media Center: Ultimate Edition...

Their media room IP was good.., but they must of realized it was at its peek, license issues kinda threw a kink in media center...

But it seems they are on to something BIG... web based tv, broadcast tv, cable...etc... Interesting.. Perhaps Netflix and Hulu Integration

Well, the pay wall is where I criticize Microsoft.  I mean other devices have Netflix, Hulu and the Browser for FREE and Microsoft charges Xbox Live Gold for access to them and I think that is sad.

I found it so pathetic that I wrote to them personally and I encourage you guys to use twitter and email to write them to change that.

It is completely stupid to put services that are either completely "Free" on other platforms or have their own system for payment separate from Xbox Live Gold and that you have to "pay" both to get a service.

Since there will be more of an app store model coming to the XB1 I wouldn't be surprised to see them change their policies on any streaming apps that require a subscription like Netflix.  Those could move out from behind gold and be replaced with other things.  If they give gold members the ability to sell their digital games for example then that would be a huge benefit to having gold as well.
