All Services are stopped. I can't do anything

Recommended Posts

I need help bad, I have tried everything I know to do.

I have a computer here that wont do anything. It wont go online, I have tried different net cards. I put in a wireless card and it wont even bring up the network connector to attach to a wireless network. When I look at the services they are 95% stopped.

I removed the drive and scanned it in another computer but it doesn't find anything wrong.

System restore does not work. The firewall wall wont even allow me to start it.

I can still install drivers but that's about all i can do.

It was online but really not working right when the owner ran hitmanpro on my recommendation and then it wouldn't go online at all.

before this happened it was scanned with malewatebytes, AVG and spybot.

other than backing p the data and reloading windows 7 64 I don't know what to try next.

does anybody have any ideas?? Please.

If you can not do the system restore, then it's time for you to format.. your configuration is screwed up. If you have a restore disc, then you will be able to restore back to where you got the PC on first day as long as your CD drive is accessible.

Just go with a fresh install. It's so quick these days with Win7/8,

You'll spend much more time pulling your hair out with the current mess you are dealing with, it's just not worth it.

Fastest course of action is to reinstall. There is something hosing that install. It could be malware or rootkit. The only rootkit scanner that was ran was hitman. Try gmer or combofix. Could be a registry hosing you too. Never was a big fan of hitman.

Also a good place to start with troubleshooting is the eventviewer.

Like others have said, the fastest course is a reinstall, but if you're doing this for fun, lets have fun.

Start with a new user profile, throw more rootkit scanners at it, the same people that make Malwarebytes also has a rootkit scanner that seems to work rather well

It's hidden in the beta section of the site.

Reset TCP/IP to try and fix the innernet thing (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357)

sfc /scannow never hurt, you know, other then those times it makes things worse.

Regardless though, when you do fix it, still reinstall, because you'll never know what else might be wrong.

Try Windows Repair (All in one) from Tweaking.com  http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

I've been able to use it to repair issues like the one you are describing many times...

Message me if you have any questions on using it, but its really simple, so I don't think you should have many issues running it.

I usually am one of the last to ever recommend a fresh install, but your stuff sounds WAY to messed up to ever just fix correctly.

Not much of any other choice. :(

I'll mirror the response from everyone else, format and reinstall.  It will be far quicker and more certain that trying to troubleshoot the problems.

If you want to go to the trouble of tracking down the issue perhaps trying scanning for malware with the Kaspersky Rescue Disc; http://support.kaspersky.com/8093

If this was my computer i would have re installed 7. This computer belongs to this old guy that is so hard to deal with I avoided his calls for a week before i agreed to look at it. and even then i really don't want to do it.

he has over 2 TB of installed programs and everything. the most difficult person alive.

so anyways. I was able to have a working computer screen up next to this one and i was able to restart all of the services and i actually got it back up and running. enough to get it online and be able to look at some other things. I brought it back from the dead.

now that I have it back up online i intent to run every thing i can throw at it.

thank you for the reply's. I still may end up re installing windows, after everything is backed up. I have had to do this to his computer a few times and every-time even though I have backed up everything and never lost a thing he accuses me of doing just that. he doesn't even know what he has is the problem.

at the time of the first post I tried both of these and neither of them would run. All of the windows services were shutdown so nothing would work.

I would "fix" his computer one last time and if he calls again tell him to find a new tech guy to harass, sounds like he's not worth the hassle especially since you know he'll call back too soon because he's a horrible user

yep that is pretty much my plan.

I have been running this Kaspersky rescue disc since 12 noon. it is still running and has found more viruses than I have even seen before on a computer. In 20 years,

and the scan is only at 20% yikes.

2TB? Has he installed every last bit of software that MS, Adobe, Autodesk and all the game publishers have ever put out?

i cant believe no one has mentioned.

is it in 'diagnostic start up' by any chance? where windows disables all services except the few essential ones for it to run?

in the start menu type

msconfig

click Normal Startup.

Very good point, I hadn't even thought of that,

And OP if he is not a friend or he is too much of a bother, after you fix the computer, maybe you should let him know this was the last time?
