I thought it was supposed to be prison.  You know, a miserable-hell on Earth to punish these idiots who break the law of our society that they won't want to come back.  But oh no, they gotta have privileges and what-not.  God forbid they have to suffer actual punishment for their crimes.and sacrifice the freedoms and privileges of law-abiding citizens.  You break the law, you suffer consequences.  Breaking the law was a decision; they can live with it accordingly.

Let them sit in their cells for 22 hours a day and rot for all I care.  Or put them to hard labor or doing something else actually productive.  No TV, no computer, no tasty food.  If you're good and behave, maybe you'll get a book to read.  If the animals wipe themselves out inside, so much the better for the rest of us. /shrug

If they have drugs then the people that run the prisons are quite clearly not doing their jobs properly.

No, the original point of prisons was to protect society from dangerous people, a role they still fulfill. Sorry to burst the bubble but what you're obsessing over here is vengeance not justice. Prisons aren't obligated to cater to your personal thirst for vengeance.

Prisons were also meant to offer rehabilitation services to reduce recidivism rates. In many cases it seems like they've failed to that as well.

You think that's bad. The prisons over here are way too soft, prisoners get real paid jobs, free college qualifications, TV and Games Consoles daily, and they also get warm showers and soft beds.  UK troops in the army are lucky to even have a nice bed to sleep in.  ######ing disgusting.

Prison here has become an "Easy way" of getting money etc,

I have a friend who's father was arrested, sentenced and now incarcerated for child porn offenses.  Upon his release, he is allowed full internet access and any monitoring and/or restrictions are opt-in for him.  Apparently it's now a human right.

Pathetic!

Would you rather have the rehabilitated criminals and low rates of repeat criminals of the UK.

Or would you rather turn the English prisons into torture and punishment gestalts like the US and have every criminal that enters the prison comes out as a harder and more violent repeat criminal, whose only lessons prison is how to be a better criminal, how to be more violent and how the strongest survive and he has to become stronger and use more violence.

He's served the time he was sentenced to, and he's gone through all the required rehab he's had to.

If he's not able to be free now, then it's the ones that gave him the original sentence that failed.

He is getting no rehab in prison as they feel he is in for such a short time.  He will serve half his sentence as is the UK norm - the second half will be on tag.  During this time, he is still allowed unmonitored access.

If he's not able to be free now, then it's the ones that gave him the original sentence that failed.

Seeing as he was arranging to meet an 8 year old girl - all those sensibilities about "He's served his time" mean nothing - you don't gamble with the safety of kids.

And this attitude is why our prison system is a joke

Last I checked the UK isn't a crime free utopia and im pretty sure there are repeat offenders. Giving them  things like game consoles and the like is not rehabilitation.

I'm not sure but being allowed to play video games is not rehabilitation end of story.  Are you also arguing that what these guys get to do in prison is helping them for life on the outside? Facebooking and smoking weed is going to help them become better people when they get out? I don't think so.

It's supposed to be about rehabilitation.

It's attitudes like yours which are why our prison system has the highest recidivism rate in the world.

I didn't say it was, I'm merely saying that the American system is completely broken and does nothing but increase crime.

However our prisoners in a country with a fraction of your crime and murder and a repeat offender rate that's practically zero next to yours are actually allowed to game in their common room during certain times of the day, and they are allowed restricted Internet access.

Our prison system is not the reason why we have more crime than you do. We have different people here. If we had a prison system like yours i'm almost 100% certain that gang members would still be out there robbing, killing and selling drugs. You can't rehabilitate someone that doesn't want to change and sorry to say there's a lot of people that don't want to change.

Games and internet access for murderers a rapists lol wow..That sure is a deterrent to murderers and rapists.
