Microsoft buys Nokia devices and services

Somehow pressing the quote button doesn't copy the post into the reply window for me anymore (Win8.1 Preview, IE11 Metro)

So to vcfan, they can't use the Nokia name anymore, but can they still use the Lumia name?

That's what I meant actually, I really hope they keep the Lumia name

There are many Android fans crying in the corner ... dreaming about Nokia Android phones !!! ... lol ...

I don't think it's crying really.. I think most reasonable people hate that this happened (even though we saw it years ago when Elop became Nokia's CEO) because Nokia made great hardware and everything Microsoft touches withers away and dies..

There is absolutely no doubt that this is the end of Nokia. Microsoft will cut them into small pieces or just dump everything and keep the most valuable things from the company, aka patents.

I don't understand why people here think MS will ruin the Nokia brand.

MS has always been good at making solid hardware.

Now they have released the 2 Surface devices, you might not like them, but they are good looking and build very well.

I can only assume MS wants to keep putting out quality devices like Nokia has been doing up until now.

They are finally seeing a breakthrough is some European and Central American countries, why would they want to ruin this momentum

Oh, you mean like how the XBox has, or Windows, or Office, or any of their hundreds of other products? /s

Boz, you're so full of brown stuff, you should open a fertilizer plant.

The only hardware division of Microsoft that's making money at the moment is Xbox, and even that's still running a net loss. They've taken a huge loss on Surface, and barely anybody wants a WP phone either.

Edit: I don't know of a single successful mobile product Microsoft have released.

Wow, they will soon be the only manufacturer using Windows Phone. WP is definitely dead soon. Microsoft is shooting itself in the leg by making hardware for the operating systems they sell.

Elop would be a good CEO for MS I think. He led the successful Office division, so he knows enterprise. He led a major consumer company (even though for a short-ish time) so he knows how to deal with consumers. He knows software and hardware. He might not know games + multimedia as much - so in those areas I think he might need some very good lieutenants in those areas (especially games).

In short - he seems to be a devices + services type of guy that MS would want.

Microsoft now cover virtually the entire breadth of devices and services.

In the hardware realm they make dumbphones, smartphones, tablets, super-touchscreen computers, gaming consoles and peripherals.

Their software is now in everything from cars to phones to ATM's to desktops to laptops to massive server farms.

Nokia has been a successful consumer company pumping out quality stuff at good prices. They have extensive experience in places where MS hasn't really ventured before.

Nokia + MS research will put out some pretty awesome stuff, and since Nokia reasonably regularly put wacky things successfully into production, hopefully this means some of the groundbreaking work that the researchers do actually comes out into actual products. And the Nokia phone team will now be able to more easily prod the WP team into making stuff faster now.

The future is also going to be interesting for Microsoftia especially in the antitrust realm. We all know the EU likes MS' money  :p (/jk)

(On a side note - I bet Tony Bates is rubbing his hands with glee - he'll be able to get Skype absolutely everywhere. Think about all those millions of Asha phones that Nokia sells. Now if only Skype actually improved their product more regularly... Also Skype > Nokia in terms of $$$)

Only downside I can think of is that Here will not become part of MS. But oh well - maybe that's a future purchase...

Uhh, why?   Google bought Motorola and makes it's own hardware for the OS they make, I didn't see all the smaller Android phone makers jump ship, and really, after Samsung, all the other Android makers are small.  LG is like a distant 2nd with 15million units in the last quarter or something.  HTC has effectively tanked as a once dominant Android vender as well.   People seem to be blinded into thinking every Android OEM is having huge success, hardly.   I remember when LG finally passed the 10million phones for a quarter mark and it was talked up and down like a massive success for them when it's all just blind marketing BS.   The Lumia sold 7.4million in Q2, I wonder if it'll be held up in the same light or level of success as the LG news when they pass the 10million mark as well?

Ok people, seriously stop with the mole thing.

The Nokia BOARD took in Elop with the specific mission of migrating to WP, it was pretty much already decided by their they where going WP before he was hired, that's why they fired the previous guy. Despite this, Elop actually looked at other alternatives.

And Elop has actually turned the company from a death spiral to a good solid rise.

Yeah, those 3.5% globally and 7-10% in Europe is absolutely no one...

If only anyone cared about unity and Ubuntu. Heck not even 1% of the Ubuntu users and hardcore fans wanted it.

HTC is being shady on the WP One. But if they do release it, I want one.

I expect it now,  GDR3 opens up WP to more device types and so on.  HTC has to do more and just releasing another top end Android handset isn't enough, now LG sells more than them last I read per quarter when they used to be top dog.

Not sure what's exciting about it.. Microsoft managed to kill one of the great mobile companies.. They put up an incompetent idiot who would destroy Nokia and then Microsoft would buy it for relatively cheap.

This was Elop's whole duty.. from the very beginning.

And with this, when Windows Phone completely goes belly up, so will Nokia and Microsoft will in the end just get their patents and try to extort everyone else to pay them a fee since they are miserable failure in pretty much anything mobile.

You need to check the history. Nokia board people approached Elop for the CEO job. Microsoft or Elop never went to Nokia board and said select him as CEO
