So basically, the rumor at the moment is that Sony was going to announce this at Gamescom, but had to delay it and it will now come out at TGS.

There is also confusion over how Sony plans to push the device.  Apparently they are trying to decide if they should push it as essential for the platform in order to be a differentiator, or as a non essential add on.

There are no specifics on what the hardware would be or how much it would cost.  It was mentioned that it was based on the VR headset they showed off last year, but that device was $900.

Either way, if Sony does this, itll be very interesting to see how they market it and how the community reacts to it.  There has been a lot of buzz around the Oculus Rift, so we will see what exactly Sony's solution is. This also makes me wonder if MS is close to a headset of its own.  We have all seen the documents related to their work in that area, with intentions to bring it to the xbox, so maybe we are close to seeing them both roll out such tech.

Well VR is the new motion control or 3D.  Its that 'new' tech that gets us all excited.

But can it last?  We will see how its executed.

Personally, I'm excited to try these things out and I think Sony and MS would be crazy not to be researching the tech.  Since Sony has a lot of history in the area, it wouldn't be shocking at all to see them try to jump on it first in a bigger way.  As far as MS, the idea of using such a headset along with Kinect is very a slick idea, so its not surprising that they would be pursuing this as well.

Its interesting to think about the history here though.  Like 3D and Motion Controls, a VR headset is not new tech or even a new idea.  It seems like all three of these ideas get rehashed every decade or so.  Someone decided to spark a new movement for one of these three techs and for a little while there is hype and excitement, but then they all seem to lose steam and fade away, only to return after a long while in the background.

3D is just now starting to fade away again.  Motion controls are still hanging on, and now VR headsets are starting to return.  Will VR tech stick around for the long haul?  Will it result in motion controls sticking around as well?  Hard to say right now.

Oh god, please don't try to reinvent the wheel, just support the Oculus Rift.

My only thought is it has to be actually good, be cause no company would be so ****ing stupid to release a virtual reality headset if it wasn't as good or better than the Oculus Rift.

It looked like Sony and Oculus Rift were going to partner up for the PS4 VR Set, since Sony were trialing the system for the PS4.

So either Oculus Rift wanted too much per unit or Sony thought they could do it better.

Well Sony did release their own headset last year, so maybe they though they could just develop their own based on that.

I would still like to see them throw their support behind Oculus Rift

  • 2 weeks later...

How's about just throwing some support behind Oculus Rift instead?

This

Sadly in their eyes, and Microsoft's, owning the tech is more valuable (N). Standardization please, less fragmentation (Y)
