CINCINNATI -- Police said a man was shot to death and another was stabbed Thursday night during a home invasion in Hamilton.

When officers arrived at the home in the 1800 block of Parrish Avenue, they found 38-year-old Robert D. Shoemaker with multiple stab wounds to his neck on his front porch.

Inside, they found 44-year-old Chad Gabbard dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said Gabbard, whose last known address was in the 1200 block of Ross Avenue in Hamilton, was attempting to commit a robbery at the home and stabbed Shoemaker.

Shoemaker then shot and killed Gabbard in self-defense, according to an initial investigation.

Hamilton paramedics took Shoemaker to West Chester Hospital where he is currently being treated.

His condition is unknown at this time.

Butler County Coroner Lisa Mannix is investigating Gabbard's death.

Police said the Butler County prosecutor will determine if any legal action will be taken.

Nice shooting. Too bad he couldn't have got off a few rounds quicker.

Never bring a knife to a gunfight.

Sounds like the robber should have stuck with houses that proudly proclaim themselves to be "gun free."
