Windows Mail App 8.1 - Search results, am I missing something?

Windows 8.1 mail app looks great, feels great. But it still has a fatal flaw in functionality: You cannot manipulate search results, you cannot select all, delete all, nothing.

 

Am I missing some reason why this functionality continues to be omitted? Oddly, if you click on your favorites, their filtered emails are multi-selectable and can be acted upon.

 

I'm totally baffled how this basic and necessary (especially if used as an Exchange client) functionality can continue to be omitted.  :/
