GPU Core temperature - different programs with different readings

I'm using Open Hardware Monitor to graph my Radeon HD 5770's temperature, and ATI Tray Tools to show it on my tower's LCD screen (because the LCD screen control software only gets GPU info from ATT). They are slightly different.

 

Open Hardware Monitor's temp is identical to that of the Overdrive section in Crystal Control Center. But ATI Tray Tool's temp seems to be 4-10?c hotter. 

 

For example, right now, my OHM/CCC says the GPU core temp is 50?c. ATT says its 54.5?c.

However, running a DX11 game stress test, OHM says the GPU maxed out at 70?c, whereas ATT says it maxed out at 80?c.

 

So unfortunately, the relationship is not linear; ATT isn't just using an offset of the OHM/CCC temperature.

 

So why are they different?

They're likely reading different sensors. What does GPU-Z say?

Why does GPU-Z show 4 different GPU temps?  And the one on the top doesn't look like an average of the 3 in a group in the middle. Are there really 3/4 different sensors in my card, and if so, why?  I didn't think this card had 3 cores...

there are a few sensors on modern high end graphics cards, 1 is for the GPU core, 1 is for the RAM, one is for the power/voltage controller/regulator, not sure what the others are but they are most likely parts of the CPU core or die.

 

 

i'd have to suspect GPU #3 and GPU tempurature have been mixed up, the GPU #3 is going to be the core tempurature and #3 the die tempurature (the outside metal part of the GPU core case) 

 

programs are probably getting the 2 mixed up so this would be why your getting 2 different readings. 

 

i would try removing all ATI drivers and software with 'Driver Sweeper' (just google it, run it and remove ATI and CCC drivers/software with it) and then install the latest drivers for the card.

 

if you have your desktop icons arranged in some order, quick fix for that when they get messed up, open Task manager, end 'Explorer' in the processes tab and then in the 'Applications' tab, select 'new task' and type in 'Explorer.exe' and they will be back to how they were.
