Avarage processor speed

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Does anyone know the avarage processor speed of a mainframe, mini server, desktop pc, laptop, tablet and smartphone?

Thanks already.

This is a pretty loaded question. Clock speed means nothing these days. Architecture of various CPU's are just vastly different. It really doesn't make sense to compare a 1.7 GHz Snapdragon 600 (found in HTC One, and other smartphones) vs. a 1.7 GHz Intel Core i3 3317U (found in ultrabooks). Thus, you can only compare clock speeds of CPU's amongst the same family (example: Core i5 4570 vs. Core i5 4670).

The average processor speed of pretty much every single device out there? No not personally.

Not that speed alone really means a lot nowadays as manufacturers push towards more and more cores etc.

Define "speed" first. Clock speed is but one of many factors that influence how much work a CPU can do per second, and there are different types of workload at which different architectures excel more or less, i.e. floating point vs integer, single-threaded vs multi-threaded, bandwidth-bound vs cache-bound scenarios, etc. There's no single meaningful point of comparison between processors.

That said, the order in which you listed these different types of computer roughly corresponds to their relative "speed" in terms of overall computational power.

Like other have said this is a rather hard question due to architecture and cores etc...but pure clock speeds

mainframe: no idea

server and desktop 2.4GHz to 3.2GHz

laptop (not inc gaming) 1.3GHz to 2.5GHz (gaming would push up similar to desktop speeds)

and smartphone 1GHz to 1.9GHz

hopefully that answers your question, but you can't compare all of those with each other.

My stuff is pretty much average:

Mainframe: Dual (2 CPUs) Hex-core 2.66Ghz (Xeon)

Mini-server: same as 'Computer'

Computer: Quad-core 2.8Ghz (i5)

Laptop: Dual-core 1.6Ghz (i3)

Tablet: Dual-core 1Ghz (Cortex-A9)

Phone: Dual-core 1.2Ghz (Cortex-A9)

I expect most people to be in that range... give or take a little bit.

There are more variables you aren't taking into account, but there is the answer you asked for.

A common measure of performance (which does not exist) would be required to calculat such a thing.

I would say probably flops would be best though, right? Having said that, I think this is something that could be influenced by the architecture of a CPU, it could look great in synthetic benchmarks, then perform somewhat differently in the real world.

I'd say the "average" smartphone would be a lower speed dual core. Say 1.2GHz range

Average tablet and laptop would be probably be higher end dual core.

Average PC would be fastest dual core or low speed quad core.

Servers vary wildly.
