The loaning and trading of digitally-downloaded games on Xbox One is something Microsoft intends to implement in future, according Xbox director Albert Penello.
One major drawback of buying a digital game is the inability to trade in or lend out that game as you would a retail disc. But Penello told Gamespot that lending and trading digital games "has to be part of the experience".

"That was one of the places that we were actually trying to pioneer," said Penello when asked about digital game trading. "We were trying to implement the ability to trade [and] loan digital games with your friends which is something that no one else was doing," he said in reference to the Xbox One's now axed Family Sharing initiative.
Family Sharing was one of the more unifying announcements surrounding Xbox One's controversial digital policies, which would have allowed players to share their entire game library with ten designated 'family members'.

Specific details on how the system would have worked weren't revealed before Microsoft confirmed that it was putting the idea on the backburner following its decision to reverse various Xbox One DRM policies.

But Penello indicates that Microsoft will revisit the idea. "I think we need to do that. That has to be part of the experience," he said.
"Right now, we're focused on launch and we switched the program back to discs, because that's what customers wanted.
"I get a lot of mails saying 'god, please bring back the family sharing.' We'd love to figure out how to bring that back. I still think it was a good idea. Maybe it was a little too soon for some people, but I still think there were a lot of good ideas in there. And we'll bring it back when the time is right."
This mirrors a previous statement from Xbox One chief product officer Marc Whitten, who said of the possibility of reintroducing Family Sharing, "If it's something that people are really excited about and want, we're going to make sure that we find the right way to bring it back."

I really love Microsofts approach lately, they seem to be addressing customer questions more and this is giving out some great information. Things like this Digital sharing and the external drives being used to store games are great features that I am really looking forward too. Hopefully this is a feature they really invest in, as I can see it a great selling point.

the loaning part has me intreagued. send a text to a friend halfway across the country, and you could be playing a game he loaned you in a matter of minutes.

Exactly, though I can see this lending being something that does require Gold.  Still, i'd be fine with that if it also means you get to sell off your digital games to others and aren't stuck with them.   I've got a number of arcade games on my 360 i'll probably never play again now that I finished them.

Once again, the more Penello speaks the better for Microsoft in general. His words are more relatable, he seems to understand the gamer/geek crowd than the suits at Microsoft.

Maybe this can happen within the first 6months or year of the X1 being on store shelves.

They can call it the X1-Green update (Like 8.1 for Windows was called Blue at one time)

Albert Penello, seems to understand that some consumers need to be slow fed, information and have their hands held when it comes to certain aspects.

If they can get this feature back, and do it within 12months, Microsoft will be putting its competition in a very troubled situation early in the next gen battle.

After Mattrick's departure, I think the Yusuf Mehdi is the only suit left in the Xbox team who doesn't belong there. He didn't do anything good at MSN and then Hotmail/Windows Live. Sometimes I wonder if mediocrity is what gets you promoted at Microsoft.

I still have hope in rest of the team - Penello's boss, Mark Whitten also comes out as a non-suit type. We then have Phil S and Phil H, both wear suits but they seem sincere - they just need to STUF. They don't know how to wow audience. :p

This ^...

If they choose to keep Yusuf around, it should only be for things like Billboard Ads and commercials.  Though I wouldn't even trust him with that.

Whitten seems to have gotten it together rather speedily after the backlash during the reveal.

Any type of public speaking, or interviews with Tech sites, it should always be Penello...

At times, I even want Major Nelson to SHUT UP...

Family share has to be #1 priority on their list.  Especially if its the ability to share FULL GAMES with 10 'family' members.

I was one of the silent numbers that liked the concept of the Xbox One before the "OMG always connected!!" outcry.  I hope they go back and support the features they backtracked on because people with no imagination hate change and can't imagine doing something differently (then go and buy tons of Steam games).

I think he's right about the time is right. A lot of people are starting to warming to the digital games concept after they've actually clarified some of the extra features which come with it: Game multitasking, No disc swapping etc. Once people start downloading games and this feature comes around, I think it will be given a warm welcome by most when the time is right. I'd probably say around this time next year.

The best way to do it is to ease it back into the XB1 piece by piece instead of all in one go like the original plan.    Lending and trading digital content should be simple enough to add 8 months from now for example.  Besides I think Dashboard updates will happen quicker this time with the XB1 because of the nature of the OS and the dashboard itself.  They can add things with simple updates and not have to basically update the whole software stack like on the 360.

Although i agree with this in part, it's also going to have a lot to do with the timeframe that was set out pre-release. In part i'd imagine that Penello got lucky that he's become in a position to talk about these things.

Dumb Luck is the best... :D

And the fact that most of the Suits at Microsoft can't speak the Tech Language helps a ton too...

If Microsoft can really get this done by next year...  Microsoft will dropped a WEAPON of MASS DESTRUCTION very very early in the "Next Gen Console Wars"

And my doubts about MS this generation are back.

If they think they can get x millions of people on board and then flip the switch back for the DRM to protect game sharing, it's going to kill them next time. They're lucky to have gotten away with it once.

Excuse me, where did you see them say they would bring back the same DRM?

That ship has sailed, they can't bring that system back.  Plus, they don't intend on doing anything with physical media now.

Their new plan would only involve digital media, so the whole 24 hr check would be useless.  Basically, they have had to come up with a new way to deliver the digital media features they talked about before.

They haven't but when it comes to MS these days you have to expect the worst tbh. DRM will always be involved, it's not limited to physical copies.

I wasn't referring to the 24hr check in either. There is plenty of ways for them to ###### it up.

Don't worry about coming up with a legitimate argument against them even when they're trying to bring great services to the system like digital game trading.

Time will tell. They tried it once & they need to protect games. Iis it really hard to imagine they won't have another terrible DRM scheme in the works?

And I'm not against digital game sharing, I'm definitely all for it. I've just yet to see an implementation of DRM that doesn't harm consumers in some way & Microsoft haven't exactly been on the lower end of that scale.

Still ###### at them for killing my GFWL library. Idiots in that company

Well we wont really know until they offer the features, so we will see.

I did want to say something about the GFWL stuff.  GFWL is going away, which is a good thing, but your library will not be in accessible.  MS is moving all of its gaming related services into the Xbox service on the PC.  So that means you will still be able to access your games via the Xbox pc service once they do the transition.

GFWL is an antiquated system and its plagued with issues.  MS wanted a clean slate and the xbox service is so much better.

Unless things have changed since I read the initial announcement, some games which use GFWL MP are going to be "broken" and others, i.e AoEO are going completely offline. The latter I'm the most ###### off about seeing as I played it from the beginning in the beta and even bought a boxed copy to support them.

I read some developers were going to patch MP over to Steam, but nothing confirmed.

We don't need another service to replace it, except of course to replace the broken mess they're causing.

Some games are going to be patched over to Steam, but some aren't, especially older titles.

AoEO shutting down is not really due to GFWL going away, but more about MS dropping support for the game itself.  Unfortunately, that game didn't take off.  I think it sucks too, I enjoyed the game.

Actually there was a need for MS to replace GFWL.  It was a mess of a service feature wise and it was never going to compete with Steam in that form.  The Xbox store/service will be a better service for users.  I just hope MS does good by us and transitions any digital purchases made on GFWL to Xbox.

Keep in mind that MS has not even officially confirmed GFWL shutting down.  The reason this is a story is they accidently posted something about an end date of July, 2014.  So once they officially confirm it, I expect we will hear more about the transition to the Xbox store and services.  My thinking is that they are still working on the transition part and intended to wait on the announcement until that was done.  Since the end is a year away, I think we have not heard the whole story yet.

AoEO has support. It was completely overhauled just a year ago. Is it going to rival SC2 or Civ? Not a chance. GFWL is so intertwined with it though that it can't continue without it. They'd have to rebuild the game from scratch from what I've read and at that stage they'd be better making a sequel if they're going to spend time/money on something. **** like this is why the original DRM would never have worked on X1. It's probably going to crop up more often with MP games on PS4/X1. Not looking forward to it one bit.

The story is true. We might not know all the details or any contingency plans but there's no doubt about it. Closing the PC marketplace was just the start of it. And tbh, in recent experience, when MS is too scared to talk about something it usually spells bad news. Ask Adam Orth all about it.

Considering the direction Steam has been heading, there's absolutely no reason NOT to.

Also, I TOTALLY agree with you on Major Nelson. He's a thorn in Microsoft's side, imo.
