Need a program with lots of adware

Recommended Posts

I know it's a weird request and I'm not sure if I'm even phrasing it right but I want to teach my son how to install programs that have a section that will install other applications like Chrome, Mcafee, etc.  The more software it wants to install the better.  I'm not looking for malware, just want to show him what to look for with out next, next, nexting through the whole install.

Hopefully that made some sort of sense.

I don't know of any legitimate programs that take the user through one or more installation nags. I've noticed that WinSCP does now include OpenCandy:

Another sneaky one is Java - every update comes with pre-checked boxes to install the Ask (I believe) toolbar.

Also, with screenshots:

Damn it, I just downloaded some "freeware" recently that was loaded with bloat/malware. I swear I had to un-tick 5 boxes worth of useless software before installing. When I come across it, I'll post back. (Y)

Avast Free Antivirus has a box that asks if you want to install Chrome with it.  Skype also has a few boxes about changing your homepage to Bing.  Hope this helps a little.

Agreed, Cnet has really gone downhill in the past couple of years. They force you to download their downloader (as ignorant as that sounds) and bundles it with adware/spyware, you name it. I used to respect Cnet, not so much any more.

Slightly off-topic, but I try avoid free software that is only available as an .exe installer for these very reasons.

If the program itself is only a single .exe with a few libraries, there's no reason it cannot be supplied as a zip file and run portably.

surprised nobody mentioned uTorrent. It's got like 5 different adware prompts throughout, with *different kinds* of selection/checkboxes for each. That 1MB installer is so full of junk that the program's already fully installed by the time you click through the wizard. you don't actually see an installation progressbar at all.

Has it become that bad? It's been a while since I last installed ?Torrent.

that is an awesome thread!

yea, i don't complain much about it because i can avoid it all and they nicely have prefs to disable all the in-program ads, but tonnes of people are still sticking to 2.x because of the 3.x bloat. apparently only a small fraction of the installer is the actual program (uTorrent 2 installer is 300k).

Thanks for all the replies :)  I didn't think I'd get so many suggestions.  I was hoping you'd understand what I was asking for and apparently you did.

Thanks i_was_here for that link.  It's exactly what I was looking for.  Thanks to Relativity_17 for the link to a thread right here in Neowin.  That'll help also.  Thanks everyone else for your great suggestions too.

Hello,

Adobe Flash and Oracle Java contain sponsored apps, as well.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

A Flash update is what prompted all of this :)

I was wondering why McAfee wanted to do a scan. "I have McAfee now?"

Shark007's Windows 7 codec pack has a couple of prompts now I think.

I think it had at least 4 different pieces of cr@pware attached to it the last time I installed it ;)

@the OP - you might like this article (mostly for the tips on how to grab as much adware as possible lol) or the original one
