I teach English at an inner city high school in Chicago. I just purchased 5 Surface RT tablets with my own money through Microsoft's Educator Discount program. I'm really happy.
I've started setting up stations in my room where students can rotate and work on various things. I'm really happy with how things are working, and the kids love working with the Surface's.
I was really hesitant about buying the tablet because of all the negative hype surrounding them online. I'm so happy I listened, but decided to try them on my own. I really don't know what is bad about them.
I think the Surface is a well built machine. It is strong, sturdy, the type keyboard holds up to high school kids typing on it for hours on end. The screen cleans easily, and the whole thing is responsive. I can do some much with the classes and sharing files, for example, through SkyDrive. Every class has their own account, and logs in, which gives the their own SkyDrive app.
The app store is small, but it has the basics. Research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, educational tools, are all there. I don't download games, because that isn't the purpose. I bring one home every day, and everyone at my house loves it. My brother in law wants two for his house, my soon to be brother in law wants one for his.
The tablet is simple, the perfect size, and all around a great laptop. I just wanted to say all this because I see a lot of negativity surrounding the Surface. Here is a supporter of it.
Last thing, I get these for 300 shipped through Microsoft through their program for this month, anyone wan to donate to my classroom, let me know.
PS, I'm not writing this for donations, and will delete that line if you want, just throwing it out there because we have some wealthy and non wealthy users here.
