I did it... purchased Nokia 1020

Recommended Posts

Well, I did it. I purchased the Nokia 1020 from Amazon for $158.99 (total). I looked at a black one at the AT&T store this morning but I didn't like the color and white, well, it's white. I should get it Tuesday or Wednesday.

I lose 2 apps. My local bank (they don't have a windows phone app) and Dish Network app but I may be able to use the Sling app (but I'm not sure). I didn't use either app very much. All the other apps, I should be able to get or substitute with others.

The bigger screen, camera, and MS Office were the main reasons why I purchased it.

I hope so. I have an iPhone 4S, Apple TV, Macbook and an iPad mini, so I'm going away from the apple infrastructure on this purchase. I think I made the right decision though. Can you imagine how much an iPhone 1020 would cost?

iPhone 1020? I reckon that would be at least 4 times more powerful than an iPhone 5s!

Those apps will be available someday... just give them some time.

Congrats BTW.

I have been giving them time since 1 year. I gave up and went back to Android.

I have a 1020, I had a 4s before this.  The camera on this ROCKS. keep in mind you will get better pics if you learn to adjust the settings yourself.   Also do as much editing on the phone as possible. I noticed a lot of programs on pc's cannot handle the big 35 or 38 megapixel images  and will either not show them or automatically down convert them . Also to share the 3x pictures you have to copy them to pc via USB first otherwise the programs on the phone will downconvert them to 5 megapixel.

as i understand it,if you use the nokia camera app, that will take the full 38 megapixel images, and you can send them over usb to the computer. but if you use the stock camera app, that will take the mega sampled 5 mpixel images. correct?

The procam app takes both 38 megapixel images and produces the 5megapixel versions (you can change in the settings if you want the app to keep the high res versions or not) The stock app only keeps the 5 megapixel ones.  The stock app opens faster so if you do a lot of picture taking that needs to happen quickly set the stock app as default. If you do not mind a little slowness when opening the app with the cam button then keep procam  as the default. I count the procam app taken 7 seconds  to open up.

I am sorry. Seems that you are impatient...

I can wait for the specific apps to be released...    the phones do not bother me at all... I can live without it if I cancel the phone services.

I'm not off contract with my Samsung Focus until November and am planning on finally upgrading to WP8 (can't wait).  I'm wondering if the 1020 will still be worth it by then.  Personally the 1520 is just to big for me, I'm kind of hoping they will have a new 41 megapixel phone by then.

If someone isn't so app crazy that they can't live without specific apps that are still lacking on WP then it's probably harder for them, though for the most part there are a number of good 3rd party apps that make up for the lack of official ones.  I understand if you need that one bank app that isn't around yet but I have no doubt it'll come.   Another strong quarter for the Lumia should have them developing for it soon.

Anyways, I have an 8X but since I don't take that many pictures on my phone, or in general if I was on the market for anew phone now I'd hold off for any of the new GDR3 devices in November.    The 1520 is a bit big even for me but I'd jump on a 5" GDR3 lumia with this same camera if/when they do make one, no questions asked.

I should get it today. I'm having it shipped right to work. They know I'll be useless after I get it.  :shiftyninja:

If I don't get overly excited. I'll take some pictures unboxing it.

What are you guys doing to protecting your 1020? Are you using a cover, A film, or what? For my iPhones, I had gotten a cover and then a belt case (where it is most of the time).

If you have the time, consider doing a review of it (with pics) and I'll feature it on the main page at the weekend. So you'll have a few days to do it if you want :) https://www.neowin.net/forum/forum/104-reviews-by-members-for-members/

I'm getting one this week hopefully, waiting for stock in AUS, I'm switching carriers at the same time.

I'm looking to move out of my Android comfort zone, I like the UI parallels to Win8, 95% of my apps have worthy alternatives.

The innovative phone camera will be a bonus (I'm going to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this year so it will be a good test opportunity)

I thought with Windows Phone 8.1 on the horizon it would be a decent time to change, also only 3 months from the end of my current contract.  I was already looking at the 925 but with the camera on the 1020 my preference shifted to that.

Hope all goes well for you with this switch, enjoy having one less device that needs iTunes :P

I for one will be buying a leather folding cover if one exists, otherwise I'll probably look into getting a clear plastic one (crystal cover or whatever they're called) and the obligatory screen protector, personal preference.

I have the 1020 also. The camera ROCKS. IYou will seriously look for things to take pictures of. One problem I ran into is on the PC side. A lot of programs do not show the 34 and 38 megapixel pictures at native resolution.  A lot will down convert them  and make the pictures look worse then they are. So a lot of things will be better off done inside the phone. Things like cropping come out better on the phone.

Don't panic if app XYZ isn't to be found on WP8. There's a ton of non-official versions of apps floating around that are just as good.

Lots of good and enthusiastic programmers who can't wait for the real deal pumping out apps for you ;-)

And keep us informed on your experiences and questions.

Photoshop or Lightrooom should be fine though not everyone has those, we are talking big photos though, what's the size on the full 38MPix versions? I'm guessing 20-25MB?
