At least one shot at US Navy base in Washington

A gunman has shot at least one person at the Washington Navy Yard, a naval installation in the US capital, say officials.

The US Navy confirmed police had entered the building in search of a gunman, after at least three shots were fired at 08:20 local time (13:20 GMT).

At least one person was injured, the Navy said.

Personnel at the base have been ordered to "shelter in place", the Navy said.

The US Navy said shots were reported to have been fired at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters at the yard in south-east Washington DC.

Dozens of emergency vehicles have converged on the site.

As many as 3,000 people work at the command, which engineers, purchases, builds and maintains ships and submarines for the Navy.

The Washington Navy Yard is the US Navy's oldest shore installation, first opened in the early 19th Century, according to the Navy.

Yep, watching it on the news. I'ts still an on going situation. But this begs to question, how? That place has tight security (or was suppose to). You can't just walk in there randomly. They have guard posts, camera's and security around the building. You have to have an I.D to get in as well.

Has to to be a soldier as building 197 is the Command Headquarters building. So probably means its a inside job most likely.

I think in some cases you can't even have weapons.

It's a navy base, plenty of them around.  Something similar happened a few years ago on a UK Navy Submarine a navy officer shot some fellow officers.  ###### like this can happen unfortunately.

If only those people were armed, they could've defended themselves!

:p

But arming people isn't any good without training.... oh wait.

I was actually half serious. During the school shootings, people were screaming about how if the teachers/students were armed, they would've ended quickly.

If it makes sense to have guns at schools, why not at a Navy base?

Yet you opine that the only armed people on the planet should be military and police because they have training. Make up your mind man.

Most personnel on stateside bases especially are not armed, usually only MP's, thats the reason things like this can happen, the gunman knows he will be in a place where he can shoot without reprisal, if he knew he was going into an area where potentially every individual can respond with equal force, it would at least make him think twice.

We will need to wait and see, but its possible (likely even?) it is an MP I would guess.

Actually, I'm a supporter of restricted firearms ownership - not banning them altogether. As I've said many times before, I have several shotguns on the property and occasionally go out shooting rabbits. I also used to be a member of my local shooting range. But I am strongly against firearms being carried in public and consider handguns an unacceptable risk, as they are too easy to conceal. As for the police, I support specialist firearms units but am against the routine arming of the police.

Not everyone walking around a Military base is armed, only a select few, the mandated Armed Guard Force, and these guys will be on the Entrances to the base. There might be a Quick Reaction element waiting for not always. Once you're physically on a Military base, pretty much nobody is armed. I'm stationed at an Air Force base in the UK, one of the bigger ones where several Typhoon Fighter Squadrons are based, they recently made the decision to cease Armed Guard until the threat level is heightened again. The guys on the gate to not even have a weapon anymore, it would probably take around 15 minutes for an armed force to attend anything. They'd have to get someone to get the Armoury Key, take the 5 minute drive to the Armoury, grab the Rifles, drive to the Ammo Store, get the ammo, take the 5 minute drive back. I'm sure you know how much damage you could do in that time.

Fair enough, I can respect your opinion, just that your previous comment made it appear you were even attacking your own position on Police and military carrying firearms.

Apparently they have the shooter confined on the 4th floor.

I'll bet money he'll be killed. He's gunned down Police, wouldn't be surprised if the people cornering him were colleagues or friends.

Another day, another shooting in 'Merica.

There have probably been shootings in every country on the planet as of the time of this shooting, just because something gets publicity doesn't mean it's the only thing happening.

A witness said that the shooter was definitely an employee of the navy yard.  Either this guy was part of the security or the security sucks.

If it is an employee, security is meaningless unless the building has full security at the front door which most places on a base don't have unless its a very special building. The only place he COULD have been caught is the front gate of the base, but considering how the base here is, chances are the front gate guards just check IDs and let the workers through. Base commanders get pretty pissy about the guards holding up traffic at the front gate at the beginning of the day since it makes everyone late.
