At least one shot at US Navy base in Washington DC

Recommended Posts

USA + Easy access to guns = Never-ending mass shootings to numerous to count.

In other words, just another day in America.

How do we know this isn't the work of terrorists? It's too early to make any judgments.

My condolences to todays victims

Same here.

Washington Navy Yard gunman named as Aaron Alexis

Aaron Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth, Texas, was killed at the scene of the rampage at Washington Navy Yard.

Police were initially searching for two additional "potential" gunman, but one has since been ruled out.

Alexis was formerly a petty officer 3rd class who served full-time in the naval reserve from 2007-11, said the US Navy.

It is not yet clear why he left the military, or how he gained access to the facility.

Witnesses said the gunman sprayed bullets at office workers in a cafeteria and in a hallway at the heavily secured installation in the US capital.

Police responded to reports of two additional suspects in Monday's shooting, but have since cleared one of them, a white male.

They said they were still looking for someone described by witnesses as a black male, 40-50 years of age, wearing olive kit and carrying "a long gun".

And for perspective; 6 kids were killed in a Detroit house fire, a man was killed when run over by street racers, a dog was stabbed and skinned alive, etc. etc. Repeat for every city over 100k. No national headlines.

I always want to know the motive behind this sort of senseless murder, it was obviously premeditated. It is always annoying to me when they kill the guy before finding out.

Off topic to the Gun control debate people.

Link to some stats, sort by Homicide by firearm rate per 100,000 pop

http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list

Compare the Homicide by firearm Rate in USA to England, and Australia which have tight gun control laws. The fact that there is less homicides in the westbank and Gaza by guns than the USA says something.

Anyone have any statistics on violent crime rates? I think that England and Australia probably still have reasonably high violence rates, but these will be knives and stuff like that. American culture ("gun culture"), larger population (therefore more unhinged people) and perhaps even different health system (i.e. no NHS to go to for mental treatment, US mental health services are a state-by-state patchwork) all contribute to the higher rate of gun massacres. Also - obviously - a gun will help, you can't kill quite as many people with a knife, but I'd be interested to find out why the US has more massacres due to gun rampages, and why UK/AU/etc don't have murderers driving cars through crowded areas, and things like that.
