Rockstar Warns Xbox 360 Players Not To Install Both GTA V Discs

Recommended Posts

Xbox 360 players who make installing games to their hard drives part of their gaming routine should use caution with Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar says installing the "play" disc, in addition to the one marked "install" could create performance issues.

Word came via Rockstar's support account on Twitter, in response to customer questions. "An 8GB install is required. For optimal performance, we recommend not installing the play disc," read the tweet. Rockstar didn't respond to additional questions asking for elaboration. For the time being, just don't do it.

This potential issue is only relevant to the Xbox 360 version of the game, as the PlayStation 3 edition ships on a single Blu-ray disc.

Just a heads up.

No, EuroGamer already made it very clear in their article. You can install the Play Disc, but not to the drive where the Install Disc is installed so that it doesn't interfere with the texture streaming.

There have been a couple of multidisc games on the Xbox 360 in the past with the same problem. If you have a fast USB flash drive and install the other disc there it could be beneficial over the disc drive's speed.

The 360 only has 2.0 USB drives. How does having a "fast" USB flash drive work?

There are many different types of USB drives that may support the USB 2.0 specification but will never be able to saturate it, ergo: there are many USB2.0 branded devices out there that are crap even if they sport the USB2.0 branding.

Yeah it happens.

Same thing applies to usb 3.0 drives

They have the performance to keep up with SATA 3, even with an SSD, but you have to make sure you get one with a good chipset.  Manufactures find ways to cut corners and cut costs at the expense of performance.

I guess its not a big deal since most people don't care, they aren't using drives with maximum performance in mind.

Yeah, Halo 4 spanned 2 disks and warned not to install both, even Halo 3 can come on 2 disks (game and multiplayer) and you shouldn't install both.

Seems a rather long standing issue, wonder why it hasn't been fixed.

Because it can't be fixed. It's a xbox 360 issue.

Seems some people are reporting that it plays just fine with installing both discs anyway, maybe you just need a better HDD

It's not really something that can be fixed by MS, rather than optimization by the developer of the software. It's definitely not an Xbox 360 issue as the hard drive has enough speed for proper data streaming.

The developer optimizes for data streaming from 2 different sources thus if you install the other disc to another source (USB flash drive e.g.) the delayed data problem does not present itself.

should we install the two disks or not?

Rockstar advises against it.

Who the hell gave this topic a vote of 1 star? Honestly...

That makes no sense though, how is it faster to use the HDD and DVD, or HDD and USB drive, than just the HDD?

It does, Rockstar optimized their game to fetch data from both the hard drive (the mandatory installation) and different data from the optical drive at the same time (2 different buses), thus producing the best result. If you install both the discs on the hard drive, it becomes sort of a bottleneck and it isn't able to fetch the data efficiently and fast enough, causing pop-in. If you install the play disc to the USB flash drive that problem is solved as it will still fetch data from 2 different sources.

This has been the case with a few games in the past too, Halo 4 had this, but much less noticeable if I'm looking at Digital Foundry's videos.

Very interesting, Thanks for clearing that up :)

I wonder if digital versions of the game will be affected by this?

There is no digital version for the Xbox 360 right now, but if there is a Games on Demand version in the near future it will require a bit more optimization before release.

But I'm sure Rockstar will do that as I've seen it in the past with LA Noire and Max Payne 3 on the Xbox 360 too and they turned out fine.

Can anyone help me?

I bought my brother this game (he has an xbox 360), when he gets to the second level the screen goes black and it freezes and goes back to the beginning. It then mentions something about not having enough storage space- but he has double checked this and he has more than enough storage.

Can anyone advise whether this has something to do with the 'Rockstar warns Xbox 360 players not to install both GTA V discs?'

If so is it even possible to play the game without installing both discs?

Just install the one disc - not the play disc. Then run the game with the play disc in. If your brother has already installed both discs just uninstall it and reinstall the one disc.
