So for people with many files it makes sense to plug their old drive into my PC on a SATA hotswap, back it up onto my system, install windows, plug back into my system and copy the files back onto the users drive. Everything was fine with my old Nehalem 2.66 Core i7/Gigabyte EX58-UD5 mobo. Now that I have a Sandybridge 3.4Ghz Core i7/Asus Sabertooth P67 mobo, it copies the files from the drive okay but then after installing Windows on the drive, I can plug the drive back in, and copy the files back. Or so it seems. Upon putting the users hard drive BACK into their PC, the new files are not there. Totally disappeared. My Computer indicates that the space has been used. Plugging the drive back into my P67 board, I get an "Access Denied" message when trying to access the folder. Chkdsk goes ahead and frees up the space, as if the files were not supposed to be there. What the hell? I haven't changed my methods of doing things - I do the proper eject and unplug. I have tried in both IDE and AHCI modes. It happens on both normal and SSD drives. I have used both the Intel and Jmicron controller on my board. What is going on? It is almost as if the files are there, but the MFT isn't updating or something. papercut2008uk Posted September 17, 2013 Share Posted September 17, 2013 could it be something to do with the version of windows your using's security features? some operating systems are getting better at keeping users data safe from other users on the system, the version of windows might be barring access to the files from a different user profile from being accessed?
